Extreme sports have made their way to Costa Rica for their first ever three-day festival that will run from today until Sunday at La Guácima, Alajuela. At the end of every day there will be musical performances and clubs dedicated to the after party.

The Festival International Sport Extreme is the first of its kind to come to Latin America with professional and amateur participants from all over the world. The festival organizers have also brought in some of the biggest names in reggae, electronica, house, and drum and bass for one night. Artists will perform for their designated night for their genre of music. All musical acts start at 6 p.m.

The competitions are in FMX, BMX, skateboarding, wake boarding and mountain biking. FMX is freestyle motocross with motorcycles. BMX is racing on bicycle in motocross style. Eliminations begin early Thursday and the finals are on Sunday, followed by an awards ceremony.

The Tuasa bus to Alajuela will offer trips to La Guácima for 1,000 colons one-way. The buses to the event will run until late so attendees can enjoy the musical portion of the festival. The Tuasa bus stop is the same one as the airport stop, located right across from Parque La Merced on the north side of Avenida 2.

Ticket prices vary from one-day passes to all access passes, including entrance to concerts and clubs.

**"AFTER EARTH"

Superstar Will Smith's crew starting arriving in Costa Rica - Wednesday - February 1, 2012 at 9am to film his latest movie.

“After Earth” will begin filming Feb. 6, according to Twitter updates by the film’s director, M. Night Shyamalan, and screenwriter Gary Whitta.

Whitta announced on his twitter account Monday: “This week the AFTER EARTH cast and crew moves to Costa Rica to begin filming!”

Smith arrived in the country at 9 a.m. Wednesday, the immigration director at Juan Santamaría International Airport confirmed to the daily La Nación.

Shyamalan, the director best known for 1999’s “The Sixth Sense,” said on his account that some of the crew is already here, and “a year and a half of writing and prep is coming to an end.” He stated the Costa Rica shoot begins next Tuesday.

The futuristic film stars Will Smith and son Jaden as a father and son who crash-land on the planet Earth 1,000 years after it has been abandoned by humanity, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Last July, Smith and Shyamalan were spotted scouting film locations near Arenal Volcano in north-central Costa Rica.

Smith, 43, has not been in a movie since 2008, when he starred in “Hancock” and “Seven Pounds.” “Men In Black III,” the third installment of the hit sci-fi comedy, comes out this summer.

Jaden Smith,13, starred in 2010’s remake of “The Karate Kid.” He made his acting debut alongside his father in 2006’s “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

Shyamalan last directed the critically lambasted “The Last Airbender.”

“After Earth” has a 2013 release date.

The 2012 election cycle is upon us and new Federal regulations

(MOVE Act - http://Justice.gov/opa/pr/2010/October/10-crt-1212.html )

now require us to REGISTER EVERY YEAR

with our State elections officials for

Presidential, Senate and Congressional races.

There are 2 important facts to remember to ensure that you can vote; and that your vote counts:

1. You must request a new Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) DURING the CALENDAR YEAR you're voting in (so you can NOT register in December if your primary is in May).

2. You must do this even if have voted in the previous election and you have automatically received a ballot from your local election official

This is important because if an election is challenged, then the un-requested ballots will not be counted even if you received it without requesting it. That way, you receive ballots for all of the elections for which you are eligible during the calendar year.

It's MY turn - I NEED YOUR HELP!!

Many of you have found and used this information blog over the years - http://LivingLifeInCostaRica.blogspot.com - to help find info on various services from massage therapists, Apple computer technicians, doctors, chiropractors, where to buy appliances - places to go, things to do+++.

Just a few months ago I added a counter to it and found that as of this week - I'm getting OVER 10,000 views a MONTH!!! WOW!! I think that it's time I "Monetize" it eh???

For over 4 years the blog has been a gift of love from me, but I ended up putting more of my time creating this and helping others have more ease or business for themselves for free and not promoting my own guest house hence I ended up having to close it (tourism being down was a contributing factor as well. It's been a GREAT eye-opening situation getting to look at some past patterns!!).

Now I'm in transition - re-inventing/re-defining myself - doing a lot of what I've been doing for years and LOVE so much (gathering and sharing information and connecting people) but it's slow in going.

Now I can REALLY use YOUR help! I'm giving up my sweet cottage/cabina (#1 reason - a sweet guard dog right under my window that does a GREAT job at what he's supposed to do - from 5am till through the night - hence lots of barking. I'm also getting bad cell and internet connection and the remnants of Rainy Season with some mold issues) and I'll be house sitting a friends 2 rental homes - helping her get them rented out (still in Escazu but not so removed from it/ya'll - up from Paco Plaza/Country Day School in Vista del Oro - actually - if you know anyone that can afford $4,750 a month for rent - tell them about this place where I'm going to land first -

Costa Rica's Estadio Nacional (National Stadium) will go to the dogs, literally, on Saturday January 28, 2012, when the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan, will take centre stage, where he will takes dogs whose owners have behaviour problems with them.

By now most of you have probably heard that Cesar Millan, the famous Dog Whisperer (aka el Encantador de Perros) will be making his first-ever appearance in Latin America. Working in cooperation with the event promoter, RPMTV/Xtreme Family Entertainment, SASY! has negotiated the opportunity to sell tickets to our friends and supporters and retain a portion of the proceeds to help fund SASY! spay and neuter programs.

Millan fells there are no "bad dogs", only bad owners/masters. To share the spotlight Millan will bring his own pack from to show Costa Rican dog owners what is possible.

Prior to his "The Dog Whisperer" series, Millan had focused on rehabilitating especially aggressive dogs and had founded the Dog Psychology Centre in South Los Angeles. Millan's first 3 books, including Cesar's Way, all became New York Times best sellers, have cumulatively sold 2 million copies in the United States and are available in 14 other countries.

Part of Cesar's philosophy is that dogs need jobs, otherwise this leaves them bored, unfulfilled and act out. He has even created a special dog backpack (which he sells on his website for $59.98) to help your dog in his work.

In Costa Rica dog abandonment is a serious problem that is not addressed. Stray dogs or "zaguates" can be seen everywhere from the inner city of San José to the groomed parks of Rohrmoser.

February to April are the months with more dog abandonment, as the Christmas puppies now are starting to grow, demand more attention and time and costly to maintain. Some do not consider that large dog breeds start out small and quickly, within a few months, grow to pretty close their adult size.

These dogs - still puppies really - are fast left behind by their owners and many of them have tragic endings.

Cesar Millan has begun his latest speaking tour to educate people about how to get along with their dogs and the tour will see him go to 6 American cities and Costa Rica, Europe and Australia and New Zealand. It began Jan. 14. The 42-year-old Millan is the popular Mexican-American dog trainer and his show, The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan is in its 8th season (seen in some 15 countries in the world). Millan is known for taking aggressive dogs and teaching them and their owners how to live together with respect and love.

Cesar Millan: Dog Whisperer on Tour to Norfolk, Virginia on April 7. His website says he may add dates to his list of U.S. shows.

Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Cesar Millan, the world-renowned dog behavior specialist and co-creator and star of the popular television show “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” will share dog training tips and advice during his Jan. 28 show at the National Stadium in San José. RPMTV Xtreme Family Entertainment is sponsoring the event.

In addition to his hit series, broadcast on Nat Geo Wild in the U.S. and on Animal Planet in Latin America, the self-taught Mexican-American Millan has written several books on dog training and has toured around the world. Millan has something of a cult following among dog owners and has used his behavior techniques to help the dogs of celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith.

According to RPMTV Media Manager Juan Carlos Peña, Millan will talk about how to have a good, balanced, healthy pet at the Jan. 28 show. This includes mental health; Millan considers this one of the fundamental principles of owning a pet. Using his own dogs, Millan will demonstrate what constitutes good habits and correct conduct. To show how to modify dog behavior, Millan will use dogs from Costa Rica with behavior issues, and offer solutions.

Chefs to prepare rice dish to welcome

Chinese New Year

The country will usher in the Chinese New Year with a gigantic arroz cantonés for 11,000 servings.

The event begins at 11 a.m. in the vicinity of the Iglesia La Solidad, a location that the municipality has designed for a future Chinese section. There are two Chinese restaurants there now and a retail store owned by Chinese.

The FREE arroz cantonés will be prepared by more than a dozen chefs from Chinese restaurants. They will use a pan 8 feet in diameter. There also will be Chinese dancing and a dragon.

That is appropriate because today marks the start of the Year of the Dragon in the 12-year rotation of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. The mythical and powerful dragon symbolizes royalty and good fortune, and for believers, the year and those born in that year take on those qualities. Municipal officials will make a symbolic start on the barrio Chino for that reason today.

In a New Year's message, Singapore Prime Minister Hsien Loong said he fervently hoped that the auspicious symbol would prompt his countrymen to have more babies. Singapore is struggling with a low birth rate and a shrinking population. But the nation has seen a baby boom in past Dragon years.

Other Asian countries are also expecting a spike in births in the coming year from parents looking to capitalize on the wealth, luck, and courage said to come from a Dragon-year baby.

HAIR SALON de ADY (in ENGLISH!!!) - Escazu, Costa Rica

Every so often I decide to let go of MY need to control it all and be open to see what a PROFESSIONAL that understands bone structure, colics (however you spell it), tricks to take attention away from various flaws or enhance what you have - and I let THEM work their MAGIC!!

I did this the first time I went to Ady with SALON de ADY in Escazu!

I put my hair in her hands and she did an AWESOME job - THE BEST HAIR CUT I've had in AGES!!

Ok, so I wear my personality on my cuffs so she could figure me out pretty fast and she cut it short with a LOT of precision (wisps, etc.). It/I was stylin’!! I could do it a few different ways from more mature (like the pic above [not a great pic of me]) to punk/spike it more if I was in that mood (ahhh - the life of being a Gemini!!)!

Salon Ady is a bright octagonal FULL SERVICE SALON / DAY SPA FILLED with LOTS of windows and greenery (not some sterile stuffy environment!!)!!!

LOCATION: Escazu (San Rafael) - Coming from the Pista (getting off at the first Escazu exit - at HiperMas), pass McDonald's and KFC and the next light. JUST after that is a street JUST BEFORE the Shell gas station - turn Right and go down West 150 mts. on the Left (see the house above). Coming from the other directions, it's 100 mts north of Scotia Bank - on the left JUST after the Shell station near the rock quary store. It's a "grey area" if it's a legal left turn there or not but if you decide to do it, it's a SHARP left.

A few years ago I had her notarize some U.S. Inheritance Papers (never got anything from it - booo!!) for me (MEGA EASY) plus Adele to Flor at 7pm on a Friday evening to do Car Transfer papers (a bit complicated) and both times she charged just 10,000-colones (about $20)!!! One guy DESPERATELY NEEDED some documents signed on a Sunday and she was there for him!!!

Plus she is REALLY SWEET!!!

LANGUAGE: She does NOT SPEAK much English but I think she understands a LOT more than she lets on (Don't speak much Español? Bring a friend - or have an English/Spanish speaking taxi driver bring you. See my list of English-Speaking Taxi Drivers at:

HOURS: Since she works from her house she is often available when others are not (including evenings and weekends for emergencies)!!

I don't care what the rest of the world's statistics are as based on MY observations - a LARGE percent of people I know living in or visiting Costa Rica have Apple's / Macintosh's - yet finding someone to repair it or hardware or software at a reasonable and in a timely manner and finding things for your Mac can be QUITE challenging and EXPENSIVE!!

So I've started a list of resources!! If you know anyone/anything else to add - have them go to the link at the bottom of this page for the questionnaire.

LOCATION: John Thomas has a shop in San Jose-Barrio Mexico - Avenida 5 y Calle 26 though he will come to you in an extreme emergency for repair (of course you'll pay for it). He's also the man for APPLE PARTS - even old hard to find ones!

SKILLS/COMMENTS: He's one of the few people that can repair iPods. He also have used MACs FOR SALE.

The people in ICON were GREAT and have ALWAYS been VERY VERY helpful with other little things where they didn't charge me to fix/alter (but I ALWAYS gave the store person that helped me $10-$20 as I was SOOOOO GRATEFUL!!!).
HINT: If you have a problem that you know is going to require them sending it in to their service/repair center - save yourself time by bringing it in YOURSELF to the main office in San Jose (that can save you a day on either end). SOME things might be able to be done in a local store like I've had to go there twice when I couldn't get wireless to work in my laptop (the day before leaving on a trip) and all I had to "pay" was a nice tip to the guy that helped me out.

WHERE TO GET MAC'S and PARTS FOR MACS•APPLE COMPUTERS:

Hardware/parts for Macs can be VERY CHALLENGING to come by, take time and ain't cheap in Costa Rica (I believe they charge about 37% Duty on computer items)! Used parts are even harder to come by!! Consider trying to find people coming to CR to bring you things. Which are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in the U.S! I think the cheapest way to go for getting used computers and parts are http://CraigsList.org - ESPECIALLY http://SFBay.craigslist.org (the Silicon Valley / San Jose / San Francisco Bay areas - the hub of the computer world!! Also New York)

WARRANTY'S FOR MACINTOSH/APPLE COMPUTERS PURCHASED

OUTSIDE OF COSTA RICA
If you bought your computer outside of Costa Rica, CHECK THE WARRANTY BEFORE YOU COME (or buy it) as I bought my Mac's in the States, telling the dealer that I was buying the iMac and iBook specifically to MOVE to Costa Rica. They sold me the Extended Warranty for an extra 2-3 years. My first week here, I was having problems with links on emails so I called one of the main internet providers and spoke with a Mac specialist (trust me, they do not have many here!!) who punched up some things in the computer and told me to reboot my computer. I made the mistake of ASSUMING that all was fine and hung up and restarted my computer and DEAD - BLACK - NOTHING!!! Since I work 10-15+ hours a day on my baby, I PANICKED!!! I called back and "he wasn't available" and that was the message I got for 3 days. First thing the next day I ran to Mac dealer near me (ICON) who told me the Hard Drive was blown out (this on a 3 month NEW computer!!!) and then gave me the "great" news - that my warranty did not cover me outside the U.S.!!! So $350 or so and a week later - I was back on track. Unfortunately I wasn't able to use my laptop much because I had accidentally left behind the power source for my new iBook and they couldn't get a new one in for WEEKS so after buying all the batteries they had (at about $100/each I think) the new power cord FINALLY came in (I want to say that was about $140 or so).

Immigration agent accused of faking data on foreigners

Another immigration agent has been detained at Juan Santamaría airport on the allegation that he was helping foreigners fake their trips in and out of the country.

The security ministry identified the man by the last names of Monge Navarro. He is facing a charge of computer fraud.

The ministry said that he had access to the SIMMEL immigration data base that keeps track of who enters and who leaves the country.

He was detained by what the ministry said were fellow members of the Policía Profesional de Migración y Extranjería under the jurisdiction of the frauds prosecutor.

Another immigration agent, identified by the last name of Gómez, was led away by investigators Nov. 15 under the cloud of the same allegation. He, too, was accused of altering the immigration data base.

The ministry said that Monge had been under investigation since December. The man has worked for the department since June 2008, investigators said.

The ministry did not explain fully actually what has been alleged. However, tourists can extend their stay here if they leave the country just as their visa expires. For North Americans that is every 90 days. Others who are illegal here can use fake data to show that they just arrived.

Gómez faces an allegation of legalizing the status of the four immigrants from Columbia via fake computer data. He was the subject of a telephone tip in June. There was no indication that the two cases are related.
