Actually, I think this is a GOOD thing as I can't start to tell you how many times I've gone to pick friends up at SJO airport and watch them descend, only to jerk back up last minute and be diverted to Panama City, or Managua, or Liberia airports because at the end of the Eastern runway, there seems to sometimes be a fog belt that gathers there (worst time for that these days at SJO - during the Rainy Season - May-ish - November with the worst month for re-routes being October)!!
I hear it has the elements they're looking for to rectify the problems they've had at SJO - there's room for 2 runways (it's on 800 acres), they say the wind factor is good, the airspace isn't all cluttered/busy, migration of birds were part of the factors in choosing this space as well as it's almost at sea level (makes for easier maneuvering of aircraft), which makes for excellent visibility (hmmm - I hope this land wasn't owned by "someone's family member" like some others have been known to - even if it was NOT the best space . . .).AND, it looks like they're also talking about having some sort of train/rail line coming out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Orotino is a bit further from San Jose (about 30 minutes vs the current 20 minutes [of course that's withOUT traffic . . . ]. Though as one living on the South/West side, I find that ) but it's closer to the Pacific beach destinations so that's great for the tourists!!The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO ) country advises the studies and development of the new terminal.
What will happen to SJO? MAYBE some of the things happening at Pavas Airport will move over to SJO - like the smaller plane landings (I wonder if my FAV - NatureAir will move over to Alajuela??), flight schools, private planes and helicopters, air ambulances++.
