Regular commercial Peanut Butter can be REALLY EXPENSIVE in Costa Rica!!
BY FAR the BEST deal I've found has been whatever brand PriceSmart happens to be carrying at that moment. Last I checked (December 2014) they had Planter's - a 40 oz/1.3 kilo jar for just 3,395-c (around $6)!!!! Heck, it's around that price in the major markets for 1/3 of that size!!! (I love it #1 to help give medicine to pets and #2 - for one of my "Road Trip Foods" - to make Peanut Butter, Gayabana and honey sandwiches)

It's been awhile but if my memory is semi-working, I swear I've seen them at the Mercado Central in San Jose - from the coffee roasters by one of the entrances.
You can get them to grind them also for you - then just bring it home and make it however you want it.

There is a vendor that sells natural peanut butter at La Feria Verde in Aranjuez (San Jose) http://www.feriaverde.org/, which is a great farmer's market! I can't remember the exact price, but I think it was around $10 for a large jar.
ReplyDeleteThe same brand is sold at the Green Center in Santa Ana http://greencentercr.com/. Last time I was there it was about $20 for the same large jar.
I have not seen this brand at Automercado (Escazu, Lindora, La Guacima) or at Mas x Menos in Santa Ana.
