Gasoline Price Increase Effective TODAY•WEDNESDAY - March 21

SURPRISE!!!
The BIG Gasoline Price Increase ALREADY went into Effect TODAY/WEDNESDAY
(NOT Thursday as originally announced!!)

Thought you had till today to fill up your tank before the BIG 21¢-US/109-colones increase???  SURPRISE!!  It changed overnight - A DAY EARLIER than Imprenta Nacional (http://www.ImprentaNacional.go.cr [it's one of those incorrectly formatted sites that requires the www.] - the government printing office) originally announced - so when you woke TODAY - at 12:01am on Wednesday - March 21, 2012 gasoline prices had ALREADY CHANGED / INCREASED!!!

Imprenta printed the notice in La Gaceta - http://Gaceta.go.cr (which such notices MUST be posted before action can take place) on Tuesday - a day earlier than originally planned - so forget rushing to the pumps at the last minute!!!

The increase means that a litre of:
SUPER  -  now +109-colones/.21¢-US = jumping to 724¢/liter (approx $1.41/liter = $5.66/GALLON!!!)
REGULAR  -  now +106-colones/.21¢-US = 706¢/liter (approx $1.38/liter = $5.51/GALLON)
DESIEL -  now +70-colones/.14¢-US = 645¢/liber (approx $1.26/liter = $5.04/GALLON)
(American's get to quit whining over their price of gas as it's SOOOO MUCH higher throughout the rest of the non-oil producing world than what they're paying!!)

Natural gas, kerosene and jet fuel will also increase so watch for things using those gases to increase as well.

The increase was approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicas (ARESEP - http://aresep.go.cr - who regulates and sets the prices for gas and many other things - see the list of who all at - http://aresep.go.cr/cgi-bin/index.fwx?area=90&cmd=servicios&id=9248 .  You might want to bookmark this site and check it every so often if not regularly to keep up on what all's going on within Costa Rica!!) last week in response to a request by the state refinery, RECOPE, justified by rising prices of crude on international markets.

This price increase will make gas in Costa Rica the highest in Central America!

What this means in real terms is that it will cost ¢6.540 colones/$12.77 more to fill a 60 litre (16 gallon) tank.
