I'm waiting to see what Costa Rica does with Earth Hour this year (I could not find any Earth Hour Celebrations/honoring in 2012 and in 2011 they had the opening of their New Chinese Futbal•Soccer Stadium - probably THE BIGGEST surge of power in one place!!  The OPPOSITE of what Earth Hour is about!!  The ONLY thing I can remember seeing about it was in 2009 when they had an awesome concert in Plaza Democracia with Manuel Obregon, Carlos Tapado Vargas and Jaime Gamboa [though how did they handle the music during that
It's frustrating as Costa Rica claims to be one of THE "most green conscious country in the world" doing any organized thing about/with it???  I DID get a notice on my cell from ICE at least!!)

I do hope Costa Rica does not embarrass (more like humiliate) themselves again by not doing something for this event - especially after I saw this quote last year in

Estoy esperando a ver lo que Costa Rica hace con la Hora del Planeta de este año (no pude encontrar ningún Fiestas en honor a La Hora del Planeta / en 2012 y en 2011 tuvieron la inauguración de su nuevo chino Futbal Stadium • Fútbol - probablemente la mayor oleada de poder en un solo lugar!! lo contrario de la Hora de la Tierra lo que se trata!

Es frustrante como Costa Rica afirma ser uno de los "más verde consciente país en el mundo" haciendo cualquier cosa organizada sobre / con él?? Me hizo llegar un aviso al móvil del ICE por lo menos! )

I have a question for YOU -

Are any of you using a VPN ("Virtual Private Network" for those of you that aren't real technically savvy like me!!  Some people use it if they're living abroad and can't get many of the sites for tv shows/movies we can't get in Costa Rica [ahhhh - the "copyright laws" here [or lack thereof which gets us blocked even from ABC, CBS+.  Some use it to hide their IP address for whatever reason])

As the NFL calendar season comes to an end with Super Bowl XLVII on February 3rd, the 2013 National Championship calendar season of the

American Football Federation of Costa Rica (FEFACR)

will have just kicked off. The league is entering into its 5th season as an organized sport, recognized by the Costa Rican Sports & Recreation Association (ICODER) and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

The 2013 FEFACR National Championship 12 week calendar season kickoff is at 2pm on Saturday, February 2nd with the 2 Cartago teams the Raptors vs Dragons going head to head. Don’t miss the feature game at 6pm when the 2012 FEFACR National Championship finalists, three-peat National Champions, the Santa Ana Bulldogs, take to the grid with their notorious arch-rival team, the Toros, who are certain to show the Bulldogs their competitive vindication. As always, an exciting match-up of teams to watch.

This new year welcomes an influx of Costa Rican players to the American football teams, once considered a Gringo dominant sport in Costa Rica no longer holds true. The teams are mostly comprised of Costa Ricans proudly sporting their respective team jerseys. As well, fans can catch the athleticism of the newest edition to the league, the U-19 Division. Most of these players have progressed to the Minor league through the FEFACR youth flag football teams that were first established three years ago, the Titans Juniors representing Alajuela/Heredia/San Jose and the Dragons Juniors representing Cartago.

During the second half of 2012 the FEFACR 1st Division league saw a shake-up of teams, with teams forming and teams folding. The five teams that have emerged for the 2013 National Championship calendar season are as follows in first name alphabetical order:

President, Paolo Vincenzi of FEFACR stated that during this National Championship calendar season fans can expect to be entertained with the half-time performance of a cheerleader squad. Fans can participate in the half-time ability kicking and throwing competitions, to win sponsor donated prizes.

Cuty Monge Stadium (Olympia Village) in Desamparados, San Jose, will once again be the host stadium for the 2013 National Championship calendar season with two games per Saturday (except Semana Santa), a 2:00 pm day game and a 6:00 pm night game.

And of course, as always in Costa Rica. . . . fans plan for rain!

ELECTRICITY RATES in Costa Rica

shared on a message board the answer to the question about what Electricity Rates run in Costa Rica.  What he shared was:

"The cost per kWh is around 100-colones for residential.

It starts for the first 30 w/h for 1,890-c (about $3.80 based on the current 496.75-colones per U.S. $1).

Then the price increases to 63-c (12¢-ish) per kWh for the next 200 kWh

Then it's 99-c (.20¢) per kWh for the rest of the bill based on info taken from the electric company - CNFL - www.cnfl.go.cr (note it's one of those companies who's website was set up improperly so you MUST put the www. first or it comes up as a bad address).

Now if you really want to save money, Tarifa Residencial Horaria, is the way to go.  You have to request a special meter (the ONLY person that can set this up is the person who's name is on the bill/account) and you get a BIG REDUCTION in the bill if you use your electricity mainly during quieter times (8pm-6am) when the rates (depending on your kWh usage) range from 132-178-c per kWh.  Next cheapest time is from 6-10am and 12:30-5:30pm where it ranges from 55-c to 71-c.  And, the MOST EXPENSIVE time is 10am-12:30pm and 5:30-8pm.  I do believe Saturday and Sunday are billed out at the lowest time.

To all above you have to add sales tax, street lighting, fire department tribute!

So with this information if you can calculate how much kWh you will spend that will give you an idea how much you will pay."


Depending on how you choose to live, electricity rates can be on-par with the U.S.!

Hey - might some of you be interested in getting together & exploring where these buses end up???  Do
ESCAZU and SANTA ANA BUS ADVENTURES
(or something like that!  Anyone out there come up with a more creative name??!!)

 where once a month or every other week we take a different Escazu or Santa Ana bus (and even the TRAINS) ALL the way to the end of the line to see where it goes to, get off and have lunch there (keeping it budget oriented) and explore the area or some place along the way!!!!

We'll probably leave Escazu around 9 or 10am and back around 2pm or so (OPEN for the first groups schedule at this point).

There's of course Safety in Numbers and it could be a FUN group thing to do!!

VICKI'S COMMENTS AFTER STAYING IN SAN ISIDRO de Grecia for a few weeks:
What a SWEET little area!!  The catholic church is the center/hub and of course across the street there's a soccer field!

GR102 is located 15 minutes from Downtown Grecia by car. The bus goes right up Calle Rodriguez, but because the house is set back 200 meters/2 blocks from the house on a gravel/dirt road (especially not fun in the Rainy Season) - you probably would want to have a car (I have a GOOD North American standard - English Speaking LEGAL taxi driver I can share information on if you need him in the mean time!).

You're about 45 minutes to Alajuela (the Airport), 45 minutes to Atenas, 20 minutes from the beautiful Oxcart and Furniture making capital of Costa Rica - Sarchi and 40 minutes to San Ramon.  For your Culture • Shopping • heavy duty Medical Fix - San Jose is just an hour away and Escazu is only 45 minutes on the new Pista del Sol highway! 

Need a BEACH FIX??  Puntarenas or Jaco are just a 1-1/2 hour drive!

So basically - you're about in the middle of many points!!!

(quite the feat in Costa Rica!!)!!  It has a nice size Expat Community if you're looking to connect with other English-speakers - just head to the main park (just in front of the beautiful unique Metal church - Iglesia las Mercedes - youtu.be/UEYRpnIOc4Y • youtu.be/cZgJWjLhBa4 • youtu.be/uwh7A15LDyo [a focal point of Grecia]) or Cafe Delicias.  Want to interact with the locals?  You have LOTS of Ticos (what Costa Rican's call themselves) in Grecia.  Want a balance?  There's an on-going Conversational English Hour where expats help the locals improve their English!  Their Feria•Farmer's Market is quite the thing and is on Friday and Saturday - youtu.be/Cdqm8V1tObo and their Mercado Central•Central Market is by the main bus area - youtu.be/vXm9GZzyVcg  - and a nice Park where lots of gringos hang out  •  a Mall (Plaza Grecia) with 5 Movie Screens (many movies shown in Costa Rica are in often in English with Spanish subtitles) and MANY choices of restaurants (including Goddess forbid - Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell and McDonald's now [where you hardly see any North Americans]).  There are many celebrations and events that happen throughout the year - youtu.be/B9LyuUacqiI (this video features the big celebrations around Costa Rica's Independence day - September 15)   There seem to be some expat gals that live in Grecia that often attend the Newcomers women's group and the Women's Club of Costa Rica so you might be able to catch rides in for those.

The neighborhood has LOTS of kids - though they're ALL Ticos and there is a Private school in town that's only about $150 per month, BUT - it's NOT in English (but what AWESOME opportunities for ALL kids!!!)

A DIFFERENT WAY TO DO IT!!!

Paula shared her husband Steve's experience doing it a DIFFERENT WAY - by just showing up at Migracion withOUT an appointment!

"My husband Steve, went today to Migracion•Costa Rica Immigration to get his cédula renewed. He decided to go straight to Migracion because he needed his cédula as soon as possible and his appointment with the bank isn't until the 22nd of February.
We were told that Migracion would take you without an appointment on any Wednesday.

 So armed with his old cédula, $120 (dollar is at a good rate at the moment), carnet, up-to-date CAJA slip, and his passport he went to Migracíon first thing this morning (Feb. 5/14).

The bank did not open until 8am so he waited.

He then went to the place where his papers were processed and because of his age (77), he was put at the head of the line, (they do this with all adultos majores over 65 when they see your old cédula) - and the line was very sort by the way.
Once processed, he went to the office where they take your photo - again put at the head of a very short line and was out of there with his new up-to-date cédula within 2 hours.

Why go to all the trouble of going to the bank, etc. This was so much easier. He didn't even have time to read his book."

HOW DO YOU RENEW YOUR CEDULA•RESIDENCY?
This is what I've pieced together:

#1 - CALL Banco de Costa Rica to schedule an appointment to
Renew your Cedula•Residency 

at one of their 32 locations around Costa Rica

900-003-4639

(note that your telephone line must have 900 number access and many do not [since there is a FEE to CALL 900 numbers - in this case - 300-c per minute].  If you do not have access you will need to buy a 199 ICE Pre-Paid Phone Card [you can get one at most grocery stores].  At one point the cards still said “199” on them though now you’d dial “1199”)


How it works now:
You go to Banco de Costa Rica for your appointment (this can take as little as 20 minutes) and to pay the fee (BCR’s site says $48 - I'm awaiting the exact amount as well as what papers you need to bring with you).  BCR sends your paperwork to Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería who processes the Cedula and mails it to you (BCR’s site says this can take UP TO 25 days).
