ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!

April 26 & 27 - LTG - Little Theatre Group - "God of Carnage"

God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza

Friday April 26th, 2013 7:30pm.
Saturday & Sunday April 27th & 28th 2:30pm.

Friday May 3rd 7:30pm.
Saturday & Sunday May 4th & 5th 2:30pm.

The Little Theatre Group of Costa Rica once again brings a Broadway hit to the stage at the Laurence Olivier Theatre. Opening on April 26th for two weekends, God of Carnage, written by Yasmina Reza and the winner of the Tony award for Best Play in 2009, will come to life in the hands of some of the LTG's best known actors. Director Noel Montagano and an incredible cast, Susan Liang, Tom Humes, Lisa DeFuso and Chicago import Jim Kissane are sure to bring a high level of professionalism to this comedy. They will fill the evening with laughs.
The setting is a modern day Brooklyn loft apartment. One 11-year-old has wacked another kid in the mouth, and both sets of parents meet to alternatively apologize, assess blame, work out consequences and throw their multifarious neuroses in each other's faces.
The son of Alan, a big shot lawyer for pharmaceutical companies, and his wife Annette, a wealth manager, hit the other child with a large stick, which broke two incisors and exposed a nerve. The son of Veronica, a cultural anthropologist of sorts, author and art fanatic, and Michael, a self-made seller of domestic items, would not let the other boy play in his "gang," which initiated the quarrel. The two sets of parents attempt to civilly and amicably discuss the ramifications and punishments associated with the incident. The hell that breaks out is sleekly amusing partly because the two teams not only go at each other, they also sometimes switch sides. It can be partner against partner, or boys against girls, without an ounce of introspection or admission of responsibility on any side.
The LTG production of God of Carnage will run about 90 minutes and the group looks forward to a positive response from English-speaking theatre goers in Costa Rica.

The meeting in the Legislative Assembly in which Ms. Adriana Rojas presented the case against the National Bank of Costa Rica by FLAT FEE concept, scope and analyze the particulars of all documents with their mortgage, trust and loan with BANKS WILL ANY OF TOMORROW WEDNESDAY APRIL 24, 2013 AT 9:00 AM iN THE LEGISLATURE, EX-PRESIDENTS HALL. AGAIN, THE DATE CHANGED TO WEDNESDAY MORNING AT 9 PM (somehow I do not think it's 9PM)

Sunday, April 21, 2013

OVERSTAYED YOUR VISA? What's up with the new $100 for each month you're over fine laws for people that have OVERSTAYED their Visa for Costa Rica?

What's up with the new law for foreigners that have OVERSTAYED their Tourist Visa for Costa Rica?

WHAT IS THE NEW LAW ABOUT?
For EACH MONTH a
Non-Residents
OVERSTAYS their Visa, you WILL BE FINED $100
(if you're even 1 day over your Tourist Visa, you WILL be fined $100!!)

OR
if you can NOT afford to pay it you

MUST STAY OUT OF COSTA RICA for
3 Months for every 1 Month you're over!!

WHAT'S UP WITH IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW LAW?

T
he LATEST NEWS on this on again-off again law is . . .
it's on
HOLD - AGAIN!!!!

TILL WHEN??

to AT LEAST

September or October 2013

The reason given in DiarioExtra.com/Dnew/noticiaDetalle/6156 is they have not yet developed the internal controls for collecting the fine plus they are still finishing their latest amnesty program (hmmm - I saw that they were once again opening up registration to the Seasonal Migrant workers [like coffee pickers, etc.] to register till September 17, 2013 so who knows when it will be in effect!!
I believe this is the 4th new time period as it was "supposed" to be implemented September 2012, then December 2012 and the latest April 2013)

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Do you know anyone that is still over their Visa?  PLEASE send them this link IMMEDIATELY
so they can get in INTEGRITY with Migracion before this new policy is in effect and they're charged the fees or  refused re-entry (or if caught on the streets IN Costa Rica - risk being put in Immigration•Migracion jail [luckily it's not as bad as the regular jails in Costa Rica - I've visited•helped a few people there] and kicked out of Costa Rica for up to 5 years)!!

(FYI - I've known•talked to a few people that were quite a few months or even years over their visa and they did not blink an eye or scold them so DO IT NOW!!!!!  BUT, laws or no laws, you could get someone having a bad day - or you remind them of the girl their boyfriend ran off with or whatever and they MAY give you a less than 90 days stamp so
MAKE SURE TO READ WHAT I WROTE ON 'WHY SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT GETTING 90 DAYS STAMPS!")

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE GETTING LESS THAN 90 DAY VISA STAMPS?THIS IS CRUCIAL!!  READ THIS EVERYONE!!!
(or don't go crying "victim" if/when it happens to you!!)
If you do not want to POTENTIALLY be given just a 30 day Stamp (if you're from a country that gets 90 day Stamps) - OR - do not want to get a 2 Day Transit Stamp - OR -
do not want to be refused re-entry into Costa Rica  -
as well as to learn how long your country "normally" should receive a stamp for (not a lot of countries are entitled to a 90-day stamp)
READ my article
on "WHY some people are not getting a 90-Day Visa Stamp" as there are some things you NEED to have when entering Costa Rica
LivingLifeInCostaRica.blogspot.com/2011/12/people-not-getting-90-day-visa-stamps.html)

People, PLEASE do NOT SCREW with•blow this!!  It is a PRIVILEGE that we get to stay/Live in Costa Rica as long as we get to (especially for those that do not fall into a category TO GET residency.  Think about it - how easy is it for "tourist" Tico's living in the U.S. to get to stay??)

They're giv
ing you one more chance to get in
IN
TEGRITY!!
So LEAVE NOW or SOON when you have a better chance of them being more forgiving!!  I doubt very well they'll just let slide through since this law is now active.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

CRUCIAL TO READ!!!
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROOF (A TICKET) THAT YOU ARE LEAVING COSTA RICA WITHIN 90 DAYS

When you are going across the border,
make sure you have PROOF that you are leaving Costa Rica within 90 days with a Ticket with a DATE on it (see the link above for more details on why some people that tell you they did everything correctly - might not have) - or you risk whatEVER!!
(one of which is if you are caught having overstayed your visa and get sent to Immigration Jail, you COULD risk being kicked out of the country [I BELIEVE it's for 5 years but I'm trying to get CURRENT verification on that as well])
BUT - be REAL CAREFUL using an Open-Ended Ticket as IS that REALLY "PROOF" that you are LEAVING CR within 90 DAYS???   A few people with an Open-Ended ticket have only getting 30 Day Stamps (and others are not - as with EVERYTHING in CR - the only consistency is the IN-consistency)!!

and if someone does NOT have that return ticket proof - NOW they're issuing a 2 Day Transit Stamp - basically - you can go stay the night in San Jose but get the HELL out of CR!
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
WHAT BORDER IS BEST•EASIEST?
I find the Peñas Blancas border into Nicaragua to be one of the easiest (sometimes at the Panama border they ask for you to prove you that you are leaving PANAMA within 90 days also - meaning you're going to need 4 tickets - not 3 like you need in Nicaragua)
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

HOW LONG MUST I BE OUT OF COSTA RICA ON A VISA RUN?
C
ontrary to what many share on various message boards or people with something to gain - there is NOTHING in the current (or past) law that states how long you must be OUT of Costa Rica - meaning NO WHERE it mentions 72 hours.  The ONLY mention of 72 hours is in the Aduana•Customs form!!
NOTE though that Nicaragua DOES REQUIRE you stay IN Nicaragua for at LEAST 3 HOURS (with that said, you will find plenty of people there that are happy to help you "expedite it".  A few people that have shared their experiences with me say that usually runs about $60 on average (split amongst 2-3 people) - BUT - note that it IS "Illegal" so only you can decide what works for you.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
WHAT HOURS IS THE BORDER OPEN FOR ME TO GET MY PASSPORT STAMPED??
Last I checked it was from Monday-Saturday - 6am-10pm and Sunday - 6am-8pm.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
IF I DRIVE TO THE BORDER - IS THERE A PLACE I CAN LEAVE MY CAR?
There IS a parking lot AT the border - at the Aduana/Customs office -
and Peñas Blancas - Costa Rica - where you can pay to park your car if you don't want to go through the hassle to get  (last I checked about a year ago it was $10/day).  Check with them to see what hours they area open though.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T MAKE IT OUT OF COSTA RICA BY MONDAY THE DEADLINE -
WHERE DO I PAY THE FINES, ETC.?

I'm still trying to find out where, how, when you would pay the fines and will report back my findings here when I do
(does anyone have a HIGH UP contact within Migracion [that speaks GOOD English] that is willing to email me the FACTS here.  There ar
e LOTS of people (including lawyers and associations) giving their take or referring to old information or assumptions - I want to share FACTS!!!
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
THINKING OF STAYING LONGER?
(hey - why put your body through all that long 6-7 hour ride?!?!  Stay longer and visit the sweet village of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua or Isla Ometepe, NI
WHERE TO GO??
I JUST got back a couple weeks ago from spending 6 weeks in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua - a SWEET Seaside Village that's just 6 blocks by 7 blocks.  I haven't had a chance to update my info but I've started a new Facebook page -

URGENT!!! Does anyone have a HIGH UP Contact withIN Costa Rica's Migracion•Immigration or IMMIGRATION Attorney that KNOWS the CURRENT (as of April 19, '13) LAWS

Does anyone have a HIGH UP, English speaking person within Costa Rica's Migracion/Immigration or a lawyer that SPECIALIZES in Immigrations - that I can be in contact with NOW????

The last I heard, the NEW LAW about people that overstay their visa (even by 1 day) must  pay $100 for each month they're over and if they can't afford to pay it, they MUST stay OUT of CR of 3 months for every month they're over - was to take effect

April 23, 2013
but I have not heard/seen ANYTHING about it and I've even asked some of the local journalists and posted on Migracion's Facebook page (as have others) but no one has responded.

I want to help get the word out IF this latest April 23 is THIS COMING Tuesday and I KNOW there are MANY people that are WAY overdue and I want to share the info to help them get in integrity (I leave FAITHFULLY every 89 days or less [except 2 times when it was day 90!!]).

I know someone that was 2 years over that went to the Nicaragua border last week and they didn't blink an eye or say anything to her (she is a single mom that had a baby born here in that time and it wasn't possible for her to do that run till now).

We NEED FACTS NOW to HELP others NOW (I know - novel concept for some!!!)!!

PLEASE share my # if someone is LEGIT with CURRENT LEGIT info to HELP - 8-378-6679 - or email - LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

ICE mobile Internet users to receive compensation for poor service

WTH??  Just 37 people are being rebated?  I sure didn't receive any notification of this though I HAD to cancel my Internet service for my iPhone as it didn't work 98% of the time!!!

ICE mobile Internet users to receive compensation for poor service

A regulatory agency finds the state-run telecommunications company culpable for contract violations.
ICE mobile

State-run Costa Rican Electricity Institute is the biggest telecommunications company in the country.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) must return 37 percent of the monthly cost of Internet service to 49 customers after a regulatory agency found the state-run company failed to comply with contract plans.

The decision came after an investigation by the Telecommunications Superintendency (SUTEL), prompted by multiple complaints received last year.

SUTEL spokesman Eduardo Castellón said the total compensation ICE must pay is not yet clear, as “it depends on the contract plan signed by each customer for mobile Internet service.”

ICE did not appeal the ruling, and SUTEL will proceed to notify affected users. ICE is expected to begin paying customers in coming days.

The amount of compensation will be calculated from the moment customers filed a claim to the date they received SUTEL’s notification.

BANK ACCOUNTS - NON-Residents Can NOT Open Bank Accounts in Costa Rica

NON-RESIDENCE CAN
NOT OPEN A NEW BANK ACCOUNT
in Costa Rica!

If you do NOT have an ACTUAL CEDULA - meaning ACTIVE RESIDENCY  - you can NOT Open a NEW Bank Account within Costa Rica these days!!  So if you have Residency in Waiting - sorry Charlie - NO Bank Account till it you have that Cedula in hand!!!*

NOTE there have been CONFLICTING stories about this where SOME people have said they WERE able to open a bank account recently - albeit having to jump through the hoops with what they needed to get it - so - as usual in Costa Rica - EVERYONE has a different experience!!!

This article says people with residency in waiting SHOULD be able to open a bank account (this article is about the DIMEX card).  AHHHH - life in Costa Rica!!!  Who knows!  Try it and share back what your experience was (if you do not want to post something in "Comments", email me at LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com)
TicoTimes.net/More-news/Top-Story/More-control-on-bank-transfers_Friday-May-25-2012

@@@@@@@@@@

*WHAT??  IS THERE ANY WAY AROUND IT?
The ONLY way I know around it is by opening a Bank Account through your ACTIVE•PAID UP (with ALL the new taxes paid) CORPORATION.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT BUT I DO NOT HAVE RESIDENCY.
WHAT THAT MEAN FOR ME?
Well, if you plan on RECEIVING any On-Line Bank Transfers from someone that banks through a DIFFERENT bank or you want to receive a Wire (including from your OWN bank account - say in the U.S. or Canada) - the bank system requires a SINPE number (National System for Electronic Payments) - AND - NOW you MUST have a DIMEX•DIDI Card - and that card is ONLY issued to people with ACTIVE RESIDENCY•CEDULAS!!

OR - if you have someone WITH Residency•a Cedula ON your account - you can do the transfer through them (BUT - if that person is a U.S. citizen - when it comes time for them to file their bank information through the Treasury Department - they WILL have to count that in or risk being FLAGGED [remember - we're ALL money laundering, drug dealing, terrorists!!]) so be REALLY CAREFUL doing that!!!

SOOOOO, that means one thing - you can NO LONGER RECEIVE bank transfers from people with bank accounts OUTSIDE the same bank till you get your residency ACTIVE!!

@@@@@@@@@@

WHAT??  IS THERE ANY WAY AROUND IT?
To my knowledge this only really effects people that are RECEIVING On-Line Bank Transfers from ANOTHER bank•Wires - so - most people I've spoken with that do NOT have residency but have bank accounts - and SO FAR (this IS Costa Rica) - none have had any problems (as long as they're not getting money Transferred or Wired to them [yikes - that probably INCLUDES your Social Security check!!]).  Just have people walk into the bank and deposit money into your account - OR - just transfer money from people that bank with the SAME BANK!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

WHY THE HECK ARE THEY DOING THIS TO US??
Hmmm - think about it.  Can Tico's open bank accounts easily in the U.S.?  Can they get a drivers license?  Well, I think you have your answer eh?!?!!?  You can't blame them can you?  THOUGH . . . .

With that said - anyone else think this WILL ADD MORE STRIKES AGAINST Costa Rica on their fast spiral DOWNWARD as a country that does NOT bring Ease of Doing Business or Live In for ExPats or Countries outside of them.  And with that - it WILL hurt the PEOPLE of the country as tourism IS going DOWN FAST throughOUT the WORLD and people are tightening up their belt buckles with spending money and Exports WILL most likely be effected also shortly!

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Please "SHARE" this with EVERYONE you know that's thinking of moving to Costa Rica or that has a bank account withOUT residency!
.
