ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!
(see below other ways to show your appreciation)
The easiest way is with PAYPAL - Attn: LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com
(you do NOT need to have a PayPal account to do this - just a credit or debit card)
ADD INFORMATION:
Do YOU have/know of a Business•Event•News•Place•Things 4 Sale•Rent to add? Email:
LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

OTHER WAYS TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION FOR THIS BLOG

• APPLE LAPTOP - Do you have a Laptop you're not using? Mine recently broke so I'm using a lender. Must be new enough to run current Skypes & have an SDCard slot.
• Amazon.com or GoDaddy.com Credit•Gift Certificate (attn: SarongGoddess@gmail.com)
• Something else to share?? A gift certificate or invite for your business? I'm open!! (at times I'll add other things here that I'm seeking)

Celebrate CHRISTMAS DAY • NEW YEARS EVE • NEW YEARS DAY at Joanna's Cocina EclecTica in Escazu

Seeking a more UNIQUE place•way to celebrate CHRISTMAS DAY (and New Years Eve and New Years Day!!) spend it with Joanna and friends at
COCINA ECLECTICA
in Trejos Montelegre!!

Joanna will be preparing the MOST UNIQUE (and CHEAPEST I've found) Christmas treats around (EVERYTHING I've ever had from her was AMAZING!!)!!
The theme will be
Bocas•Hors d'oeuvres•Plates from Around the World!

About the only thing "traditional" with her meal will be a turkey but even that has a unique twist - a Cashew Bread Stuffing with a Herbacious Gravy - & ALL she prepares will be done in some awesome unique way!!!!

THE CONCEPT AT COCINA ECLECTICAS:
What Joanna has created at EclecTica is a VERY UNIQUE Foodie EXPERIENCE in a REALLY special space where she invites her "friends" into her home & teaches them about marrying unique flavors together (blending various spices, herbs, doTerra therapeutic Essential oils & various types of foods•food combos you've most likely never had!!!!) - creating incredible unique tasty morsels (mainly smaller bocas•hors d'oeuvres).

Her presentation is like Dim Sum where she prepares and brings the dishes•courses out to all the guests at the same time (note that it's ok to say no to something)

During the course of the day•evening these are some dishes she MAY present while you're there:
Her Turkey has a Cashew Bread Stuffing with a Herbacious Gravy  •  Korean Jerky  •  Pickled Herring served in cucumber cups (Polish•Ukraine)  •  Smoked Ham and Sauerkraut Fondue Quesedia • Mashed Sweet Potatoes laced with Amaretto  •  Crispy firecracker rolls  •  Plantain Mash with Shrimp or Bacon or __??  •  Shrimp Ceviche with pickled Ginger & Passion Fruit  •  Shrimp Coctail with Seaweed (Japanese)  •  Fennel infused Salmon with a Beet & Carmelized Onion Relish  •  an Asian Noodle Soup or Chilled Yam Noodles & Sake Consomme . . . ???!!!!!

TIMING FOR TODAY:
Plan to be there for AT LEAST 1-1/2+ hours though if you stay longer - you'll get more food!!

NOTE:
Since there weren't many RSVP's ahead of time (yet many are coming now), she's working solo so please be more patient than normal (& feel free to help out!!)

TIME:
4pm till they run out or people finally leave
(that's when I'm going)

PRICE:
10,000-c/$20
(Food ONLY.  Drinks NOT included in this price.  Incredibly low price compared to everyone else but her food will be AMAZING and memorable!  MOST I'm seeing are asking $45-$80 per PERSON!!!)

Reserve your space now for her

Where to celebrate CHRISTMAS EVE•VISPERA de NAVIDAD & CHRISTMAS DINNER • CENA de NAVIDAD - Where to find the fixin's to make Christmas Dinner in Costa Rica • TAXI's Working & MORE - 2014

This page is about who's having special Meals and Celebrations geared towards Christmas Eve and Christmas Day around Costa Rica (or are just open since these holidays, not lots of places are open).

NOTE that a LARGE percent of NON-Beach area restaurants and businesses in•around Costa Rica pretty much close DOWN BY around noon on December 24 because a large percent of Tico's celebrate MORE on Christmas Eve - December 24 (that seems to be Tico's big time to gather the family, eat [TAMALES are THE THING to eat on Christmas Eve!!!] and just P-A-R-T-Y!!!!!)

And a HUGE percent of Nica's (the workers) go home till the Sunday after New Years!
So NON-Beach areas can become a Ghost Town often till the Sunday after New Years (THOUGH - I'm finding fewer people heading for the mountains and beaches - and more staying in town so hopefully that will mean more places staying open!!!  The MEGA AWESOME thing about this time in those places is the traffic is practically non-existent and MANY tourist places are pretty empty from Museums to Volcanoes and White Water Rafting!)

I think this is one of THE HARDEST Lists to make as MANY places don't even know if they're doing a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Dinners or New Years Celebrations till days before.  Also, MANY that have done them in the past don't seem to be doing them this year or are no longer in business (or they're $45-$80+ US$s!!) but I'm going to work on this and share with you hear so BookMark it and keep checking back - EVEN the day of!!!

Here it goes:

MOTORCYCLE DRIVING•RIDING in Costa Rica

Thinking of driving (or is it just called "riding"?) a MOTORCYCLE in Costa Rica???
WARNING!!!!
I SWEAR - at least MOST of the motorcyclists I've seen here seem to have a DEATH WISH!!  And MY observation (not official statistics) based on what I've seen on the streets is 98% of the accidents involve a motorcycle (and they're the first to bitch about the price of insurance going up when THEY DO [statistically] cause THE MOST ACCIDENTS in Costa Rica!!!!).

MANY (not all I'm sure though at times it sure feels like it) motorcyclists literally weave in and out of traffic - coming out of no where - with NO consideration of/for the cars/drivers!!

So if you're driving in a car, you MUST be FULLY AWARE from ALL SIDES 24/7 when driving in Costa Rica!!

We're talking you could be in a Left Turning Lane and from up front it looks clear - you go to make YOUR LEGAL Left Turn and WHAM - some IDIOT Motorcyclist with a Death Wish sneaks up from your left - INTO YOUR lane and you go into him and guess who's at fault???   Chances are REALLY GOOD that it's YOU!!!!!!!!!!
So if you're thinking of moving to Costa Rica and have fantasies•grandeur of riding that motorcycle you've fantasized about - or that you own, PLEASE do so with the UTMOST of CAUTION AND protection!!!

And I BEG of you (and EVERYONE ELSE thinking of driving a motorcycle in Costa Rica - EVEN if you're experienced), if you haven't already done it, TAKE Motorcycle Driving LESSONS in the STATES and while you're at it, you might SERIOUSLY consider taking some sort of stunt riding lessons or something to teach you how to get in and out of the situations created from the MANY BAD drivers in
Costa Rica (and I'm NOT just talking Tico drivers! I SWEAR at times it feels like EVERY BAD and INCONSIDERATE driver from the U.S, etc has come down to Costa Rica to drive!!
While you're at it get EXCELLENT accident and health insurance.
Disability Insurance and LIFE Insurance (with no Suicide clause to keep your loved ones from getting $$ as I SWEAR the majority of motorcycle drives I'VE witnessed seem to have some sort of DEATH WISH!!!)
MEGA STURDY leathers (even if you live at the beach)
A MEGA STRONG helmet
MEGA STURDY boots
+++ anything else you can think of!!!

Costa Rica's only been a "Car Society" for about 25 or so years and they've not been taught to drive in any type of formal setting - just by ANOTHER possibly bad/inconsiderate driver.

(FYI - I LOVE driving, NEVER have even come close to having an accident and elsewhere I drive like Mario Andretti [with FULL confidence of MY skills] - but there's NO WAY IN HELL you'll catch me owning a car in Costa Rica!! Driving in Costa Rica to ME - is NOT a "Joy-Filled" thing to do!!).

IF I find any Motorcycle Driving Schools in Costa Rica I'll share them here!

HOLIDAYS - ROAD CLOSURES - Caldera Carretera•Highway #27 [aka Pista del Sol] goes ONLY ONE-WAY•Direction during busy Holidays in Costa Rica. Here's the schedule

If you haven't gone to the beach during a Costa Rican holiday and you're planning on doing it - ESPECIALLY during
Easter•Samana Santa and Christmas-New Years•Navidad-Año Nuevo

and you haven't done your MEGA PATIENCE Meditation (or medication), you're in for a "SURPRISE!!!!" (ok - so LOTS of Frustration and DEEP breathing) as you think driving on the roads of Costa Rica on a regular day can be a nightmare . . . IMAGINE THOUSANDS of people wanting to take the faster highway to the beach (it does shave off about 45-60 minutes on a REGULAR day!!) ALL on the normally just 2 lanes in either direction
Caldera Carretera•Highway #27 - aka Pista del Sol!!
(add to that how if there's an accident you MUST stop dead in your tracks & not move an inch till all the PROPER people show up like the Transito Police and your insurance company [and hopefully not an INS ambulance]).

So what they do to help the flow of traffic • traffic jams is turn 2 of the lanes (one direction) so they're ALL going the SAME DIRECTION based on the popular•busiest times.

WARNING:  EVEN with this - what could normally be a 1 hour drive, could STILL be 2-4 hours so don't bitch to anyone but YOURSELF since YOU'VE CHOSEN to go during THE BUSIEST time!!!  Just bring some Kenny G, do some Meditation exercises before and learn some you can do in the car and things to keep the kids occupied (make sure to bring headsets for each of them if what they have creates noise) and just GO WITH THE FLOW!!

So here's the latest schedule - for the CHRISTMAS - NEW YEARS (Navidad-Año Nuevo) vacation time based on THE BUSIEST DAYS (if you go ANY other day you'll just GET to "go with the flow!!").

WHICH DAYS•TIMES DOES THE
HIGHWAY•RUTA #27•PISTA DEL SOL
HAVE ALL LANES GOING IN ONE-WAY DIRECTION
(heading to/from the beach on the Pacific side which cuts driving to much of Costa Rica down about 45-60 minutes])

WHAT AREAS DOES THIS ONE DIRECTION EFFECT:
Between Orotina and Ciudad Colon
(and reverse depending on the holiday/day of the week it falls on)

DATES:
(they typically do not announce those days till a week before so I'll post it here)

WEST-BOUND
For vacationers heading TO the beach from San Jose - ALL LANES - the WHOLE highway will ONLY be going West-Bound
on
Saturday & Sunday - December 27 and 28 - from 8am to 12pm/Noon

EAST-BOUND
For vacationers returning FROM the beaches all lanes will be reversed on

SAMANA SANTA:
Saturday
SPEED LIMIT:
During these times, the Speed Limit is SLOWED DOWN to 60 kph•37 mph.

This is a TOLL ROAD - so plan ahead to have Exact Change as much as possible to help speed your trip up
(there are some lanes for Exact Change which usually go MUCH faster!!).

For the latest toll charges (as of October 1, 2014) go to:

TAXI'S WORKING•DRIVING During CHRISTMAS • NEW YEARS HOLIDAYS in Costa Rica (especially Escazu)

THE HARDEST times to find an available taxi in Costa Rica seem to be:
•   Between December 24 and the Sunday after New Years (MANY MANY people [including taxi drivers] go to the beach areas).
ESPECIALLY:
•   December 24 from the afternoon on (most of the Tico's I've known seem to celebrate December 24 - Christmas Eve•Vispera de Navidad - MORE than December 25 - Christmas Day•Dia de Navidad)
•   December 25 - Christmas Day•Dia de Navidad
•   December 31 - New Years Eve•Vispera de Año Nuevo (SOME drivers will work till around 5pm only)
•   January 1 - New Years Day•Dia de Año Nuevo

Also, the Thursday•Jueves (Holy Thursday) and Friday•Viernes (Good Friday) BEFORE Easter•Samana Santa where hardly any buses even run.

So if you know you're going to be needing a taxi - MAKE ARRANGEMENTS AHEAD OF TIME & STICK TO THEM as finding taxi's around Costa Rica between December 24 and January 4 or 5th are VERY far and few between (if you've reserved a taxi and you alter the plans last minute or make him wait, you WILL be charged for that time!!!!).

So I'm going to compile a list of LEGAL Taxi Drivers and maybe some Tourism Van Drivers - for starters - mainly in the Escazu area that MIGHT be available to drive you around but don't count on last minuters as if they're not already booked, they may just go home and party!!!
