MEP prohibits sale of soft drinks, chips, cookies and candy stuffed in schools and colleges

When the school year begins on 8 February, students from schools and public schools can NOT buy soda, chips, cookies or candy-filled sodas in schools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ministries of Public Education and Health (Ministerios de Educación Pública (MEP) y Salud) banned the sale of these products, according to a decree published today in the official Gazette. (go to the La Nacion link at the bottom to see this report)

The measure aims to reduce the percentage of children and young people with overweight and obesity, according to the National Nutrition Survey, over 20%. (http://new.paho.org/cor/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=67&Itemid=222)

In addition, soda makers will have to change the way you cook food to sell, to reduce fat and sugar.
In this way, children and boys did not have access to soft drinks, even diet, can not eat meats that are not light, cross dressing products, candy, caramel, chocolate filled biscuits, snacks, flavored whole milk or yogurt-based of whole milk flavored with more than two grams of saturated fat in one serving of 100 milliliters or more than 300 milligrams of sodium or the amount of Caloris exceed 60.

Nor can sell potato chips, fried plantains, fried or fried enyucados and cooked with lard, butter or oils with trans fat.

Another restriction is the amount of dressing or mayonnaise that can be used.

Leonardo Garnier, Minister of Education, said the school sodas should be understood as part of the schools, why not consider that violates freedom of trade.

"All scientific studies show that health and one of the factors that affects the health of boys is nutrition and that has to do with the introduction of healthy lifestyle courses and with this measure (sales restrictions) to create an environment that encourages healthy living habits, "said Garnier.

However, the Costa Rican Chamber of Food Industry (CACI) is not in accordance with the guideline.
"It's an unfortunate decree, technically wrong. It is a product of the subjective perception of someone who could not be explained. Never a policy (adequate) to influence people's weight is prohibiting anything," said Mario Montero, executive director of Cacia.

The representative of the sector said that overweight and obesity in children must be combated with physical education programs in schools, as well as a balanced diet, without removing these products.
"There are very serious studies that say the problem is not food, children eat normal-size the same as in passing but the big difference is in the quantities and physical activity. The consumption of quantities is a matter of education, how forms are fed and what eats throughout the day is a matter of education, not whether the cookie or juice that I took is good or bad, "he said Montero.

Most restrictions will be in force in this school year, other manufacturers have three years to make changes in the recipe to reduce fat and sugar if you want to keep offering the food they sell sodas in schools.
