ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!
(see below other ways to show your appreciation)
The easiest way is with PAYPAL - Attn: LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

BLOOD TESTS - LABORATORY / PHLEBOTOMIST in Costa Rica

WONDERFUL BLOOD LABORATORY in Escazu (Centro)
(and Clown!)

Laboratorio Clinicio San Miguel
(2-289-8415 / 2-228-9086 / 8-374-5074-Emergencies)
HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 6am-6pm, Sat. 6am-noon
LOCATION:  Escazu (Centro) - Directly in front of the bell on the North side of the church/iglesia

I found an AWESOME laboratory for Blood work with GREAT prices AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, with a WONDERFUL phlebotomist - Renan!!!  He’s the BEST person I’ve EVER had for drawing my blood!!!  My veins are REALLY HARD to find (I’d make a horrible junkie!)!!  Most of the time they have to poke a couple+ times or dig around while inside but Renan gets a gusher the first poke & I rarely feel ANYTHING - going in or out!!!   Not only that but he said he could tell I was still a child so I got a cherry (my favorite flavor) sucker AND he made me a poodle balloon as on the side - Renan is also Mangongo the Clown (available for parties!! 8-374-5091 / 2-289-4611 / mangongo17@gmail.com in case you know someone that's seeking such a person).   He has GREAT energy!!!!

Unfortunately the staff doesn't speak much English (see if a part-time worker Sigafrido is still working there) but I just had one of my English-speaking taxi drivers there to help me out initially (see my list of English-speaking Taxi Drivers at

I had a BIG TIME blood work-up - the type that does cholesterol and all that stuff PLUS an HIV/STD test (hey - I’m single) and the whole test was around $140.  Katrina had a similar test (withOUT the “extra” test) and paid almost double for it at a nearby lab.

MICROBIOLOGIST / CLINICAL CHEMIST / BIOCHEMIST / PHLEBOTOMIST

From what I keep hearing OVER and OVER, the BEST person in Costa Rica to go to for ANY type of DETAILED BLOOD TESTS / BLOOD WORKUP - MICROBIOLOGIST / CLINICAL CHEMIST / BIOCHEMIST / PHLEBOTOMIST - with some of the BEST/most advanced equipment in Costa Rica - ESPECIALLY for anything important is:

Dr. ALVARO APESTEGUI
with LABICLIN

I don't know if I've EVER heard such RAVE reviews as I have on this doctor!!

Dr. Alvaro was trained in the states at Tulane University and I hear when he and his bud/associate Dr. Paolo Castro get together, the conversations are out of this world as BOTH have such incredible PASSION for their fields and learning!!!!

LABS LOCATIONS:
They have 3 locations*:
West (Main) - Sabana Este (2-233-5545 / 2-233-5557). HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 6:30am-6pm, Sat. 8-11:30am. Alvaro is mainly here so if you really want him, call him on his cell (8-344-5600)
East - Curridabat - next door to POPS Ice Cream (2-281-2063) - HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 7-11am and 2-6pm, Sat. 8-11:30am
San Jose (Downtown) (2-223-6643) - next door to the pharmacy inside Clinica Americana 1st floor in Biblica in the old building - next to the drug store.
*AND, he can make Housecall's (start at 5,000 [within San Jose] - depending on your area).

DO I HAVE TO COME BACK TO GET MY RESULTS?
Alvaro aims to make your life easier (heck, just by the fact he has 3 offices tell you that!!) so he can give you a password where you (and/or your doctor) can get your results via the internet so you don't need to come back in.

I was searching for someone that did live cell blood analysis in Costa Rica. The name Zoli Hargitai was listed with a Costa Rica cell number 8-319-1483. The number is not a functioning number. I looked at the website listed amm.org.mx and it lists Zoli and others in Mexico. If there is someone in Costa Rica, do you know the contact information?
