P.O. BOXES•ARARTADO POSTALS in Costa Rica are actually a REALLY SMART thing to have for MANY reasons!  WHY??

#1 - Since "addresses" are few and far between in Costa Rica - it's a better way to guarantee your mail getting to you!

#2  -  Another BIG REASON MANY have shared with me as to why THEY have a P.O. Box is it seems that RARELY do their packages seem to get checked from the Aduana•Customs (don't EVEN get me started on that MEGA NIGHTMARE!!!!  I'm not telling you to bypass them - just sharing a hint that may help you avoid one of the less than logical ways of living in Costa Rica that could take HOURS and LOTS of $$ to deal with since taxes)

#3  -  It gives you the ease of not having to wait around or go into "the city"/San Jose or nearby to get your mail.

HOW MUCH DOES A PO BOX COST IN COSTA RICA?

There are 2 things you initially pay:
#1 - 10,000-c is a one time mandatory "Right to Use it" fee

PLUS you pay
15,000-c for the year
(the price of a Postal Box is the SAME at various post offices•correo's throughout Costa Rica)

WHEN DO WE RENEW PO BOXES IN COSTA RICA
Correos de Costa Rica accepts PAYMENTS for Postal•PO Box starting around November 1/mid-November and they MUST be paid BY January 31 each year!!!
Or you loose it.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE LATE WITH OUR PAYMENT OF OUR APARTADO POSTAL?
If it's not paid by February 1st - you pay the annual 15,000-c box fee PLUS an ADDITIONAL 50%•7,500-c Penalty
If you have not paid it by March 1 - you loose your box!

You can either pay it at a Correos • Post Office
OR
You can pay ONLINE with a Visa or MasterCard at:

*NOTE:  If you need to update any of your information, you can NOT make the payment online and will need to go TO the branch where you have your P.O. Box.

CAN ANYONE GET AN APARTADO POSTAL•P.O. BOX IN COSTA RICA? 
YES

WHEN CAN I GET A NEW P.O. BOX?
These days you can pretty much get a P.O. Box*Apartado Postal year-round at most locations.  They now have plenty of boxes.  

In the old days (and maybe even still in some more remote areas) you couldn't often get it until March 1 (after they gave everyone a chance to pay their box - or loose it)
(I'm not positive if they're pro-rated)

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO SIGN UP FOR AN  
APARTADO POSTAL•P.O. BOX IN COSTA RICA?
To purchase a PO Box for the first time, you must submit: 
For a Personal P.O. Box:
A PHOTOCOPY (to leave with them) of your Cedula or Passport

For a P.O. Box for a Corporation: 
A CURRENT (less than 30 days) PHOTOCOPY (to leave with them) of the corporations Personaria Juridica - PLUS a PHOTOCOPY of the Cedula or the Passport that can legally represent the corporation.

AMCostaRica.com/111912.htm reported that Individuals seeking a new P.O. Box•Apartado Postal that they need a cédula or other valid identification (hmmmm - does that mean that a non-resident can no longer get a P.O. Box?  Or is a Passport good enough??).
