I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.

RENTAL CARS - GREAT PRICES & HINTS for Renting & Driving a Car in Costa Rica

Recently my cousin visited and bought the CostaRicaDiscount.com cards - both the one for Car Rentals which gave her 20% off ($30) and the tour one which gave 15% off MANY of the popular tours and lots more ($30 - or $40 for both!!).

The SUPER COOL thing is ONE CARD is ALL you need for all people in your party!

She said everything went perfect and the car rental was the cheapest she found.

CAR RENTAL HINTS • TIPS
FYI - Be REALLY CAREFUL renting cars in Costa Rica!!  SERIOUSLY consider getting the FULL FULL FULL insurance as most of your insurance does NOT cover you in CR.

And GET THE GPS!!  Your software from the states doesn't always "get" 50 meters from the oak tree like directions are often given in CR!!!

Also, with MANY companies, if you go "off road" (even if it's the only road leading somewhere) - you're contract can become null and void if something happens to the car.

If you rent a car online, CALL the car rental agency DIRECT to make sure they go the reservation and it's set in the system!!!!!!  This happened to my cousin and luckily I suggested she do that and lo and behold, they were sold out - though they never notified her of that!!!

I also suggest when you get the car, one person walks around the car WITH the car rental person - dissecting EVERY crack, scratch, etc. taking pictures WHILE another one of you VIDEO TAPES EVERYTHING!!!!!!!  I say that as I've seen/heard of tooooo many people having problems from rental car companies and they often didn't learn about them till they returned home and it's not so easy to deal with it from home (to say nothing of how expensive it is to call CR from the states if you don't have some sort of special card/rate!).
