Do you have a SMALL Place I can store a few things?

I'm seeking a space that's CONVENIENTLY located (IDEALLY in Escazu [or Santa Ana - or it could be in San Jose] - accessible by bus), safe, dry (not moldy), where I can store 3 suitcases, a duffel bag, 1 of those big plastic containers (it has a toaster oven & a few other things in it) & I think it's 3 other plastic bags (2 with shoes) & that I can get to maybe once a month or so.

Postal service now has plan to deliver Internet purchases

The postal service said Thursday it has created a system for shipping goods purchased via the Internet to customers in Costa Rica.

The system is called Box Correos, and it has a separate Web site -

and registration is required.

The setup is much the same as private carrier services. Correos de Costa Rica said it has an address in the United States where shipments can be sent. Packages will be shipped to Costa Rica for distribution to customers here.

Correos also said that it would handle the customs duties to deliver packages to the customer's door, at least in the metro area.

Until now getting packages through the postal service tested the patience of most expats. Usually a trip was required to the central office in Zapote where taxes and customers duties would be paid. The postal service said that customs duty and sales tax would be calculated automatically and charged to the customers online. There also are provisions for insurance.

Correos got a lot of bad press over Christmas because the Ministerio de Hacienda began charging sales tax without warning on shipments from overseas. The postal service was caught in the middle, but somewhere there is a pile of Christmas presents still awaiting delivery once fees are paid.

Gasoline Carriers•Tankers Strike is OVER in Costa Rica!!!!!!

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – September 3rd, 2012 – Gasoline carriers declared a strike and ordered a stop on petroleum delivery as of today, and for an “indefinite period of time,” until they are able to come to terms with the Environment and Energy Ministry (MINAE, in Spanish).

CR Hoy, a Spanish periodical, confirmed the situation with the president of Transportistas de Combustibles de Costa Rica, (Costa Rican Fuel Carriers), Reynaldo Quiros, who said that the discontent of the petroleum carriers is due to the fact that MINAE excluded over 100 fuel carriers from obtaining the necessary certifications to operate because MINAE did not follow through with the process to extend the terms on some tanker trucks.

“ We went to (MINAE), and were not able to reach a positive agreement. Over 100 tanker trucks were not certified and are being left out of service …This sector is very united and if these 100 trucks do not enter into service, then the rest will not either,” Quiros said.

Quiros emphasized that their willingness to maintain the strike for an indefinite period of time comes from the fact that they have been working on extensions for 3 years.  He also indicated that what they really want is time to make the corresponding repairs on the tanker trucks.

“(MINAE) gives us an arbitrary deadline, without considering that there are no shops, nor engineers.  There are only two authorized engineers and these are the ones who inspect all tanker trucks in the country.”

According to MINAE, approximately 700 carriers had to have their trucks inspected and certified for leaks and tank thickness, amongst other items.  The deadline by which these trucks had to have the certification expired on August 30th.  However, of the total amount, over 100 fuel distributors were not able to process the request to extend the period due to lack of personnel and other isues at MINAE.

The president of the Chamber of Fuel Retailers, Jose Miguel Rojas, advised that the carriers are concerned not only about obtaining the permits, but are also concerned about what is going on in the Hydrocarbons Division of MINAE, due to the lack of personnel and a series of limitations that affect them, extensions are not being attended to in a reasonable timeframe.

El exceso de velocidad en Costa Rica más que un peligro pareciera un deporte.
Los conductores se acostumbraron a acelerar sus automóviles sin importar lo que indiquen las señales de tránsito.
Tanto así que en el 2011 funcionando las cámaras en carretera durante poco más de un mes las infracciones llegaron a 17 mil.
Este año sin las cámaras solo se han multado 2000 conductores.
Pero tras el aval de la Sala IV el Cosevi afina un plan para que las cámaras no estén solo en algunos puntos.
Ahora controlarán carreteras completas desde su inicio a fin.
El plan convertirá 5 carreteras en rutas controladas.
La primera ruta será la carretera Braulio Carrillo, entre San José y Limón.
En promedio se instalarán unas doce cámaras en los puntos de mayor peligro.
La ubicación específica de cada cámara está por aprobarse en la Junta Directiva del Cosevi.
Las cercanías del túnel Zurquí, la recta de San Miguel, el sector de Guápiles y la Radial Siquirres tendrán su propia cámara multando a los conductores que excedan la velocidad.
Otra ruta que se fortalecerá con nuevas cámaras es la autopista General Cañas.
Allí se instalarán otros puntos de control de velocidad.
Otro de los puntos en el que Racsa instalará nuevas cámaras será en circunvalación.
Se maneja el sector de los Hatillos, San Pedro, Guadalupe y Rhomoser como posibles pasos de control de velocidad.
Se pretende erradicar por completo los piques.
Pero las cámaras no solo se quedarán en el Área Metropolitana.
La ruta de la muerte en Pérez Zeledón entre la iglesia católica y el Hotel del Sur también será monitoreada con estos ojos electrónicos.
En esta zona se pretende disminuir la gran cantidad de atropellos y que a la vez los videos sirvan como prueba en caso de lesiones culposas.
Un estudio de la unidad de investigación y estadística del Cosevi demostró la necesidad de también colocar cámaras en Sarapiquí, la ruta que viaja desde la Virgen al desvío con la ruta 32.
Las 48 cámaras faltantes serán instaladas por Racsa como parte del contrato que se suspendió temporalmente en el 2011.
Las cámaras multarán el exceso de 20 km a la velocidad permitida con montos que van desde los 20 mil hasta los 88 mil colones.
Si los conductores se pasan de 120 kilómetros caen en velocidad temeraria, pagando una multa de 270 mil.
Y si exceden los 150 kilómetros será un delito con pena de cárcel.
Las multas se aplicarán al conductor y no al dueño registral del vehículo.

Speeding in Costa Rica rather than look like a dangerous sport.
The drivers got used to speeding in their cars no matter what the road signs indicate.
So much so that in 2011 road cameras fined 17,000 in a little over a month the offenses.This year cameras caught only 2000 drivers.
But after the approval by the Sala IV el Cosevi the cameras WILL be RE-ACTIVATED!!
Now complete roads will be controlled with cameras from start to finish.
The 5 roads are:

Braulio Carrillo highway between San José and Limón.
On average about 12 cameras will be installed at the points of greatest danger.The specific location of each camera is about to approve the Board of Cosevi.Zurquí near the tunnel, the stretch of San Miguel, the sector and the Radial Siquirres Guápiles have their own cameras fining drivers who exceed the speed.
Another route you will be strengthened with new cameras is the General Cañas highway.
There are other points installed speed control.
Another point in which Racsa install new cameras will be in circunvalación/bypass that handles Hatillos sector, San Pedro, Guadalupe and Rhomoser as possible steps speed control.The aim is to completely eradicate the itch.
But the cameras will not only in the metropolitan area.
The road of death/Ruta de la Muerte in Perez Zeledon between the catholic church and the Hotel del Sur will also be monitored with these electronic eyes.
This area aims to reduce the large number of violations and that while the videos serve as evidence in case of negligent injury.
A study by the research unit and Cosevi statistics also showed the need for cameras in Sarapiqui, the route travels from the Virgin to the Route 32 bypass.
The 48 cameras will be installed by Racsa missing as part of the contract which was temporarily suspended in 2011.

The cameras fined excess of 20km/12mph to the speed limit with amounts ranging from 20,000-88,000-colones ($40-$176).
If drivers go over 120 kilometers (that's ONLY 75 mph!! and considered reckless speeding/driving in Costa Rica), they get to pay a fine of $270,000/$540ish.
And if they exceed 150 kilometers/93mph - that's an offense punishable by IMPRISONMENT.

Fines will apply to the driver and not the registered owner of the vehicle.

WARNING!!  At least before (and I'm pretty positive now) - there are some areas where the speed SUDDENLY is REDUCED and there is ONLY ONE sign and often not real visible - PLUS - it's NOT in a logical area where one might think they need to slow down.  MANY MANY MANY people I know have been caught in such areas and got hit with BIG EXPENSIVE TICKETS!!  To ME - the BIGGEST DISGRACE of this is this may make the Transito Policia job one of the MOST popular and lucrative jobs based on what MANY MANY MANY people have shared with me based on how OFTEN they've been ASKED to give a "gift" to make the ticket go away!!  I'm NORMALLY quite ANTI-"bribes" - but - in this case - considering how MANY of these tickets are more expensive than in MOST of the U.S. states (example -

Why has the internet & cell service been not working well lately?

ICE blames equipment failure in Internet and 3G cellular network

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has cited equipment failure as the cause of Internet and 3G cellular network outages that affected users around the country on Wednesday (August 29, 2012.  COMMENTS FROM VICKI  -  My internet's sucked for a FEW days as have MANY others I know!!). The failure occurred when technicians made a mistake that propagated incorrect routing information through the IP transport network. The work was part of upgrades to network capacity.

Some 300,000 users of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute’s 3G and IP networks were shut out from services Wednesday.

 

A network failure at the state-run Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) Wednesday kept some 300,000 customers around the country from using Internet and cellphone services for three hours.

According to reports from ICE’s support line (1115), the problem began at 3 p.m., and service was reestablished at about 5:45 p.m. Neither the company’s support staff nor its press office could immediately say what had caused the failure.

ICE reported connection failures on Internet, IP and 3G telephone services, both for making calls and sending messages. There also were reports of problems with fixed and GSM lines.

At 6:15 p.m., the international connection to websites outside Costa Rica had not been completely reestablished. Those connections were back online by 6:30 p.m.
Users from other telecommunication companies were not affected by the failure.

The tour will start with 3 bars in Barrio Amón near the headquarters of sponsor Alliance Française and make a semi-circle around the west side of central San José and conclude with beer and hors d'oeuvres at La Bohemia at Calle 5 and 12th Avenue. According to Mathilde Vanmansart, director of Alliance, the objective is to give a glimpse into San Jose's past – a past that still lives in these cantinas. “There are few places like that that people are still visiting,” said Ms. Vanmansart. “Few places still work like that.” Alliance sponsors a tour every two months, each time guiding participants through San José's history. Fernández has been running these tours for two years, and each time he uses a different theme to  demonstrate how the city has changed over time, sometimes through specific kinds of buildings like houses, mansions or churches and sometimes through specific barrios.	According to a press release from Alliance, Fernandez hand picked these bars as representations of the city's past. The cantinas are Bar La Flota on Avenida Central east of the legislative complex, El Morazán east of the downtown park of the same name, El Limón at Calle 1 on Avenida 7, El Ballestero at Avenida 9 and Calle Central, La Paola on Calle 3 between avenidas 5 and 7 and La Bohemia. Ms. Vanmansart said that some of these bars are very small, and therefore the organization needed to limit how many people could go, which is why this tour is only open to Alliance members. Most tours are not restricted only to members. “Because of this limitation, we cannot organize it for more than 10 people,” she said. However, there are still spots open on the tour and anyone can become a member of Alliance then sign up for the tour. Or they could just visit the cantinas on their own. Additionally, Ms. Vanmansart said that Fernández and Alliance would be willing to arrange more tours in the future if enough people request this. Cabinet members dismissed Costa Rican Fisheries Institute Vice President Álvaro Moreno on Tuesday, citing a conflict of interest and ethics violations.

9 months after a complaint was filed to the executive branch’s Public Ethics Office denouncing Costa Rican Fisheries Institute (Incopesca) Vice President Álvaro Moreno’s links to the commercial fishing industry, members of President Laura Chinchilla’s Cabinet on Tuesday fired Moreno from the government oversight agency.

Communications Minister Francisco Chacón confirmed the Cabinet’s decision on Thursday.

“The Cabinet decided Tuesday to terminate the services of Álvaro Moreno due to a report from the Public Ethics Office and the recommendation from that office that Moreno should be fired,” Chacón told The Tico Times.

Chinchilla will announce a replacement for Moreno in the next two weeks, he said.

The Tico Times attempted to contact Moreno, but he did not answer his cell phone.

Incopesca President Luis Dobles said he had not received an official notice of Moreno’s sacking from the Chinchilla administration, but that he would “respect such a decision if it had been made.”

Parallel to his duties at Incopesca, Moreno works as an attorney in the central Pacific coastal city of Puntarenas, where much of the country's fishing industry is based. As a lawyer, Moreno represents fishing companies, including a group of fishermen who were detained in 2009 for fishing without using Turtle Excluder Devices, which is required by law.

On several occasions, Moreno served as interim president of Incopesca while Dobles was out of the country, although Dobles said the longest Moreno had served as interim president was 10 days.

As vice president of Incopesca, Moreno, who was appointed to the post by Chinchilla’s Cabinet in 2010, would have served a four-year term. He was also the vice president of Incopesca’s board of directors, a one-year appointment voted on by Incopesca board members.


COMMENT:  Might THIS explain some of the activities and IN-activities Costa Rica has been seeing recently - with Shark Fining, going after Paul Watson, people getting arrested and then let go because they have no "priors" (do previous arrests stay on someone's record in Costa Rica if the case was dismissed???), etc.

 The Little Theatre Group of Costa Rica is looking for a NEW HOME

LTG is an amateur performing arts group which specializes in putting on presentations, plays , concerts, and musicals in English. It has been in existence for over 60 years and during that time has had several homes and put on productions in many different venues. Since 2008 LTG has headquartered itself at the Teatro Laurence Olivier, thanks to the generosity and support of its owner Nicholas Baker. A theatre is an expensive commodity however and we can no longer afford this luxury year round. We are therefore looking for a space/facility that we can call home and that we can afford.

Prior to moving to Teatro Laurence Olivier the LTG had, through the generosity of its patron Blanche Browne, a custom built space attached to a home in Bello Horizonte. This lady allowed her patio, which was fairly large, to be turned into a small performing arts space, and for several years LTG put on some very successful productions there.

We are hoping to find another similar space, close to San Jose, where we can rehearse freely, perform, store our equipment, and build our sets.

We would also like to be able to host meetings and fund raising events.

We have considered a residential space (where any permits needed can be obtained with ease) 

or an office/bodega

The ideal space for us would have a roofed open area approx 400m2 (a 4 car garage or large patio would be ideal) which we could use as a rehearsal/performance space.

Ideally there would be a small garden or yard area where minor construction could be carried out.

2 or more bathrooms would be needed, and rooms that could be used as dressing rooms.

It would need to be located in a neighbourhood where security is good, and parking available.

The best areas would be on the west side of San Jose (eg. Escazu, Rohmerser, or Sabana)

We could afford a rental of $800-$1000 per month.
