ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!
(see below other ways to show your appreciation)
The easiest way is with PAYPAL - Attn: LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com
(you do NOT need to have a PayPal account to do this - just a credit or debit card)
ADD INFORMATION:
Do YOU have/know of a Business•Event•News•Place•Things 4 Sale•Rent to add? Email:
LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

OTHER WAYS TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION FOR THIS BLOG

• APPLE LAPTOP - Do you have a Laptop you're not using? Mine recently broke so I'm using a lender. Must be new enough to run current Skypes & have an SDCard slot.
• Amazon.com or GoDaddy.com Credit•Gift Certificate (attn: SarongGoddess@gmail.com)
• Something else to share?? A gift certificate or invite for your business? I'm open!! (at times I'll add other things here that I'm seeking)

SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS BRINGING VETS TOGETHER

MARINE CORPS LEAGUE - Costa Rica
(their GREAT site!!!)

The Marine Corps League of Costa Rica needs a FEW GOOD MEN (and women) -
Marines and Navy FMF Corpsmen.
PLUS
ALL Honorably Discharged U.S. MILITARY VETERANS are eligible to join as Associate Members
This is an opportunity for U.S. Marines to associate with other Marines to preserve the traditions and promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps.
Their goal is to offer camaraderie to Marines and Naval FMF Corpsman living in Costa Rica, and to give back to their adopted country.  A lot of focus on what they do (year around) is helping orphaned children and poor children.

MEETINGS:
2nd Saturday of each month at 11am-12pm/noon+
(they usually have about 30 people attending their hour long meetings and most stay for the no-host lunch afterwards which is a tasty bbq ribs casada and drink for just 5,000-c.  Wives and guests are welcome since they’re ALL “family”.
Sometimes they ask for contributions towards various causes at the meeting so bring some extra $$ to share (Vicki is adding this not - not the Marine's!).
They even have members in the U.S. that help support their efforts)

TriCare for Life • Champus - Military Retired Vets or people on VA Disability

HOSPITAL METROPOLITANO
Hospital Metropolitano provides integral medical care for Veterans and retirees of the United States Armed Forces through TriCare Overseas (for Standard and Tricare for Life - TFL - aka Champus VA), Foreign Medical Program (FMP), Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna International.
(vets on disability that have a Disability letter from the VA and they'll treat you for whatever is covered on the Disability Letter).
Other veterans NOT on TriCare or the Foreign Medical Program will get some discount on all services.
(I hear REALLY POSITIVE things about this new hospital/clinic!!!)

CONTACT:
When you call the hospital to get started, ask specifically for the
Veterans Office - Oficina de Veteranos
International Insurance Coordinator
Aida Granados  -  2-521-6565 Ext. 22434 • 2-222-4411
8-839-8519 or 2-226-5355
(Ofelia Ramirez is no longer working there)

@@@@@@@@@@@

NOTE ABOUT TRICARE
If you live abroad, you might want to switch to the

TriCare Overseas Plan
TriCare-OverSeas.com
BUT - you MUST pay UP FRONT (and I believe you still need to get whatever PRE-APPROVED) and THEN get reimbursed by TriCare (which can take around 45 days from the time we submitted the bills online to the time you receive your check).
TriCare pays 75% until you reach deductible of $3,000 and

100% after you meet your deductible.
It's a good deal as long as you don't mind paying up front.

Last I heard Hospital Biblica was NOT doing anything special with TriCare.

VETS HAPPY TO HELP!!!
VETS - Spouses - NEED HELP??
Looking for different types of SUPPORT??
THE MAN - Mr Connected -
*MEL GOLDBERG
He’s THE MAN!!  He’s there for American Citizens (ESPECIALLY VETS) living in, thinking of moving to Costa Rica?  He’s your voice of sanity in this potentially INSANE world!!

Has a Vet Passed Away?
Mel can attend the funeral (and try to get some cronies together to attend) and present the official Burial Flag

He is ESPECIALLY helpful when someone has DIED in Costa Rica as:
•  he is connected and can assist you with dealing with the U.S. Embassy and all things associated with the death, funeral homes, burial, cremation, etc. (he speaks Spanish)
•  he has the contact to get a BIG discount on cremation or a smaller discount on burials
•  he has access to the Arlington Cemetery style tombstone and
•  Military Issued Burial Flags  (he usually has some on reserve for people that provide the proof of service listed below.  You'll need to apply for it and show them some sort of proof they were in the military and have passed away:
DD214 or Separation of Service or Discharge Papers and Report of Death certificate.  Hou HAVE to make an appointment or show up and wait)
•  He's happy to attend the funeral in uniform and gather some other vets - as well as present the official Burial Flag
•  He’s even been known to scatter ashes at sea - in uniform - sometimes with some other guys! (I did NOT say this since it's of course "illegal"!!!  Please especially contribute something for his time especially for this because of the distance - as well as gas for him and gas for the boat)

Mel’s a VOLUNTEER with American Legion Post 12 of Golfito, Marine Corp League of Costa Rica and a Warden with the U.S. Embassy
(he seems to be their UN-Official Go-To Civilian Guy!!).

Mel does all the does out of the goodness of his heart and his pocket (so PLEASE, GIVE BACK to him on SOME level if he helps you.  He's such a sweetie and MENCH!!)

8-870-6756

Mel does NOT do email - ONLY phone BUT, he does have a friend that on OCCASION will pass a message onto him but make sure to write in the SUBJECT box - "FOR MEL GOLDBERG" and email it to - carsese@yahoo.com
(tell him Vicki Connected you!!!)

ARE YOU A VET THAT WOULD LIKE TO HELP OTHER U.S. VETERANS LIVING IN COSTA RICA?

Would you like to be a resource that other vets can contact directly to connect with - to be put on my blog entry on Vet's Resources, send me:

•  Name (first name & last initial is ok if you don't want to make your last name public):
•  Branch of Service and Rank if you feel that's important:
•  Status (if one is disabled, maybe other disabled vets would like to connect & you could be supportive of each other):
•  Where you live in CR:
•  Contact info you'd like to give - email, phone # in CR, do you have Skype or a U.S. phone #? (though you might want to wait till you've communicated via email first to make sure you DO want to verbally communicate with them):
•  What assistance can you provide (a friendly voice, meet for coffee, a face at one of the meetings, go with them to a doctors appointment, help drive them, show them around, share info on your experience moving to/living in CR, someone to share war stories with - whatever!!):
•  Other info you'd like to add:

If you are charging for your services, I would appreciate it if you showed YOUR Appreciation for getting to be on this article (which I will be sharing in at least 30 Message Boards, Forums, Facebook Groups and MANY places reaching U.S. Veterans living in Costa Rica).  See the LEFT column of my blog for how to do that.
