Sea Shepherd sheds some light on the recent Shark Finning Ban in Costa Rica

In the past week The Costa Rica Star has published on the shark finning ban that was signed by Laura Chinchilla in the presence of Sir Richard Branson, near Manuel Antonio National Park.

Sea Shepherd is not buying it. This is simply smoke and mirrors by President Laura Chinchilla. Costa Rica is simply trying to do damage control for all the attention focused on shark-finning since Costa Rica issued a warrant for the arrest of our founder and president Captain Paul Watson in May of this year.

Why do we think that President Chinchilla is not sincere?

The first reason is that she will continue to allow shark fins from Nicaragua to be shipped to China through Costa Rican ports. This will of course allow for shark fins taken in Costa Rican waters to be smuggled through with the Nicaraguan shipments. The question needs to be asked as to why the shark fins are not being shipped directly from Nicaraguan ports? The answer is that Costa Ricans are heavily involved in this trade of fins from Nicaragua and the shark fin industry of both countries is linked.

The second reason is that 400,000 sharks were slaughtered in Costa Rican waters in 2011 and Costa Rica exported some 30 tons of shark fins. This means some very well connected people are making a great deal of money and that kind of money buys influence.

The third reason is that China has been investing a great deal of money in Costa Rica and China is the major market for shark fins. Chinese shark fin buyers have been very busy in Costa Rica over the last few years.

The fourth reason is that right now at this very moment poachers are prowling the waters off Cocos Island and the rangers do not have the resources to deal with them. The Coast Guard makes token arrests but very little enforcement is actually being done.

The fifth reason is that Costa Rica is continuing to demand the extradition of Captain Paul Watson for disrupting a shark fin operation in 2002. The shark fin mafia in Costa Rica wants Captain Watson eliminated and the Chinchilla government is bending over backward in their efforts to deliver Captain Watson to Costa Rica.

President Chinchilla is simply trying to appease the tourism industry by creating the illusion she is getting tough on the shark fin industry. Shark fins are big business in Costa Rica and one of the reasons there has been very little outcry from the shark fishing industry over this “decision” is because they know it will continue to be business as usual.

If Costa Rica is really serious about saving sharks, the government should ban all shipments from Nicaragua, step up enforcement, demonstrate some real conservation efforts at Cocos Island: tally up some real arrests and seizures; and they should drop the ridiculous charges against Captain Paul Watson.

The people of Costa Rica want shark finning to stop. Chinchilla needs to understand that she is not fooling anyone with this announcement. She may fool a few people for a few weeks but there are conservationists, rangers, members of the Coast Guard, politicians, and members of the public in Costa Rica who will continue to report the truth.

And the truth is that Costa Rica remains one of the most destructive shark-destroying countries in the world and certainly the most shark destroying nation in Latin America.

DENGUE on the Uprising again in Costa Rica

Seems like DENGUE is on the Uprise again in Costa Rica - though luckily not the lethal version at this point.

It seems to be reported most heavily in Santa Ana, Mora, La Carpio, Pavas, Barrio México, and Los Guido and the provinces of Guanacaste, Puntarenas, Limón and Alajuela according to the Costa Rican news website CRhoy.

DIRECTIONS HINTS - How to Making Your Life in Costa Rica Easier

One of my BIG frustrations of living in Costa Rica is how MEGA challenging it can be finding places•directions.  No thanks to not really having "addresses" and having the "It's 400 meters East and 50 meters North of the oak tree!" mentality.

Luckily I do NOT•WILL NOT own a car in Costa Rica and I am more of a Taxi kinda gal (these days I'm ALL about the EASE and Peace of Mind and this sure gives me LOTS more peace than most people I know, to say nothing of how MUCH $$$ I save [see my article at LivingLifeInCostaRica.blogspot.com/2010/05/owning-car-vs-taking-taxis-in-costa.html]) but even if I'm a passenger I still do some things BEFORE I go out!•  I do research to be clear on where I'm going.

•  If I'm not clear, I CALL the person/place for more DETAILED directions including what landmarks, restaurants, etc. are nearby.  

•  I bring the phone number where I'm going.

•  If I can't find something, I stop a LOCAL TAXI driver and ask them - NOT someone on the street because MY experience living in Costa Rica for 8 years (on July 19) has been if I ask 4 people for directions, chances are REALLY GOOD that I'll get 5+ different directions and RARELY will ANY of them be correct!!!

ELECTRICITY OUTAGES - Be Prepared with what to do when the ELECTRICITY GOES OUT in Costa Rica (& it DOES!!) - HINTS

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? 

(with pre-notification)

I’ve found in my 10+ years living in Costa Rica that it’s RARE to get notification ahead of time (especially so it can be planned out.  Heck, even the electric company’s website only seems to announce things a day or 2 in advance often!!) so one needs to BE PREPARED as MUCH as they can at ALL TIMES!!!  I’ve started a list of things one can do to be a bit more prepared & I welcome YOU to share other ideas•hints!!

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT UPCOMING OUTAGES?

For those in the CNFL power area, go to:

(NOTE you MUST have the www. in it as whomever created their website must have gone to the same school that teaches webmasters the IMPROPER way of naming them [if you don’t do the www. first you’ll get a note that says “This webpage is not available”]).  
Don’t speak much Español?  Open it in the Chrome browser & it will translate it for you - or go to  Translate.Google.com 

ELECTRONICS:  

•  Remember - if the power goes out - this means your Computer Modem•WiFi Router will NOT work also!!!  See my notes below on how to work with/around that.

Charge up your CELL and keep that ALWAYS charged as this is your MOST IMPORTANT tool!!  

•  Charge up your LAPTOP BUT - know that your Router!! 

•  Charge any/ALL electrical things that are important to you

•  No drying clothes in the dryer that the day (you get to do it the old fashioned way!!)

•  No ironing clothes so prepare your clothes the day before!

(living in a country where the electricity could go out at any given time [just because or earthquakes], I especially do MOST of the time & the rest I try to be somewhat prepared for)
•  Because often the water pumps in the area are run by electricity, that MAY mean your water will be off also so BE PREPARED for that also (see my blurb below on "

ELECTRIC GATES•ENTRANCES!!!  

If you’re not prepared, you just might NOT be going anywhere!!!  So either open your gate or put it on manual otherwise you get to stay home!!

BATHROOMS:

When I had the guest house I learned to be prepared at ALL times so I had a BIG 5 gallon bottle (of tap water) PLUS a 1 or 2 liter bottle that I kept under the bathroom sink (or I'd pull it out to next to the toilet in times of need/use) for whatever purpose I needed it for.

KITCHEN: 

Plan what you want to eat/make for the day that does not require heating up or prepare it the day before (unless you have a gas stove or a camping stove)!!  

PHONE:

Most landlines these days are run by electricity which will NOT work of course if the electricity isn't working so you might want to have one of those old fashioned Princess phones (with a cord even) for times like this (these are also REALLY good to have when there’s a storm going on & you go & unplug everything).  •  WHERE TO GET ONE?  WalMart has the cheapest I’ve seen (under $20).  Radio Shack carries them (though they’re more expensive).  This is an item you can OFTEN find in a Garage Sale•Venta de Garaje for around $5!

APPOINTMENTS • MEETINGS • EATING OUT • THINGS TO DO:  

If it's in the area, of course this means they may be effected (unless they have a backup generator so call ahead) so don't plan on going to lunch or some appointments in the area.  Call ahead.

BEING IN A CAR•ON THE ROAD:  

This means Traffic Lights will be out in your area & if it’s typical of what I’ve seen in Costa Rica, chances are good there will NOT be Traffic Police helping out at intersections so be prepared for traffic jams!

How Can I Be Prepared for NIGHT TIME OUTAGES??:

•  If it happens during the evening - the #1 thing to do CANDLES!  CANDLES!  CANDLES!!  LOTS of CANDLES around the house & flashlights strategically near entrances and doors!!  

•  TEA CANDLES:  This is where a bag of 100 Tea Candles comes in handy BIG TIME.  Put 1-2 in EVERY ROOM (ESPECIALLY the Bathroom).  I find that Tea Candles last WAY longer than most regular candles.  Or, you can cut a hole INSIDE a candle and put a Tea Candle in it to help it last longer!!  (I’ve found them to be cheapest at PriceSmart).  Make sure to have a LIGHTER(S) as in the tropics, matches don’t always last long or work well with humidy•rainy season!!!

•  FLASHLIGHTS

•  PUSH LIGHTS  (I’ve yet to find these in Costa Rica so you’ll have to get them from the U.S. but these are AWESOME!!  They’re battery operated and you can hang them from a nail on the wall.  In my former guest house I had them lined up above the wall switch so they’re easy to find and grab to go walking with them. 

•  EMERGENCY LIGHTS (these are the ones that plug into an outlet so when the power goes out, these Emergency Backup Lights kick on for a couple hours or so)

•  FLASHLIGHTS that plug into the wall and go off when power goes off

•  Candle Trees - things on walls

•  Put candles by/on each stairs

WHEN THE POWER COMES BACK ON:

There’s always a RISK of a power surge when they turn the power back on, so to be safe, you MIGHT want to have key things UNplugged - or risk it being fried!

But I NEED my Computer•Internet Fix!!!

You actually DO have a few options!!  

Find someone with an iPhone 4S with WiFi and ask if you can get their code•clave and that can share their WiFi

Get a Datacard Gizmo and a PrePaid plan!  I have this combo for those “just in case” moments and have the card in Daily mode (this would be ICE•Kolbi or C

Plan on visiting a friend or going to the next city over & hanging out at a place with WiFi (usually restaurants - especially the chains like McDonald’s & things [of course buy something!!  Don’t just be a moocher!!]).

YIKES!!  What do I do with myself???  A WHOLE DAY without electricity??

Other than the standard read (sorry - not on the Kindle/computer since you’ll be wasting that charge), take a walk, sleep, talk in person with your friends, go on a picnic, go in nature, etc.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF THE ELECTRICITY IS WORKING AGAIN

(especially if it comes back on early)??

I like to keep a ceiling light on in the main room I’d notice it in PLUS turn your stereo on or something that will generate noise when it comes back on (& I like to turn it on FULL BLAST in case I’m not in the room).

•  I leave a faucet turned on so I’ll hear it when it comes back on!

Having things ready for sudden outages/emergencies sure helped me keep calm when it happened (and it DID QUITE a few times!!  ESPECIALLY during Dry Season when we had some variation of Water Rationing/Droughts going on) as I was PREPARED - EVEN the day I had a workshop with over 40 attendees for 4 hours!!

What HINTS do YOU DO to be Prepared for loss of Electricity or Water -

What is Virgin Coconut Oil and how is it Traditionally-made??

There has been an abundance of research in recent years in coconut oil producing countries looking at the various methods of producing "virgin coconut oil." What has been discovered is that the traditional wet-milling methods of producing coconut oil using very simple technology, much as has been used for thousands of years, actually produces a very high quality coconut oil. The most quantifiable characteristic that can be tested in a laboratory test is the amount of antioxidants in the coconut oil.

The traditional wet-milling method called "fermentation." "Fermentation" here is defined as the natural separation of the coconut oil from water using gravity. No machine or other substances are used in the extraction.

First, coconut milk is expressed from the freshly harvested coconuts by using the pure water that is present inside the coconuts. The coconut milk is then allowed to sit for approximately half a day. During this time, the heavier water separates from the oil by sinking to the bottom, while the lighter coconut solids float to the top (curds). In between the coconut solids and the water is a coconut oil that is completely unrefined. The oil is then slightly heated (less than boiling temperatures) for a short time (5 -15 minutes depending on air temperatures) to remove any remaining moisture and increase antioxidant levels, and then filtered. The result is coconut oil that retains the distinct scent and taste of coconuts. This is a traditional method of coconut oil extraction that has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It is a much more labor-intensive method of producing coconut oil, and cannot be replicated by machine through mass production.
