ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!

EARTHQUAKE Information in Costa Rica - Where to check for the Magnitude & Locations of Earthquakes in Costa Rica

EARTHQUAKES are VERY common in Costa Rica.  I lived 38 years in California so I'm used to them, but they sure can be different in Costa Rica than what I'm used to (I also do NOT get how they make such a big thing about California and earthquakes as they have nothing on Costa Rica!!)!!

First off, what I would normally consider a "small" earthquake - say a 3.2 - you rarely would feel that in California - BUT, if you're close to the EPICENTER - that sure can make a BIG difference.  We JUST had a 3.2 about 1 hour ago and it's looking like it was pretty close to the SouthWest side of the Central Valley.  MOST people I've spoken with described it a similar way - like a train rolling towards you and then a BOOM!!  This one was small, relative short and fast - just the way I prefer them (earthquakes that is).  Not that I know the facts - but the ones I've been closer to the epicenter from, I seem to have heard that same train sound!!

I've noticed MUCH different motions in Costa Rica also - some jolting, swishing and more!

Here are some of the first places I check for news after an earthquake (in this order):

My NEW FIRST PLACES I check are on Facebook as others are sharing their experiences literally in LIVE TIMING:
Then this site as it seems the fastest official/technical site and it seems to have THE MOST DETAILS!!  Click on the date and it will bring up LOTS more details and maps+++!!)
lis.ucr.ac.cr

THIS SITE lists the RECENT Earthquakes in Costa Rica time.
I find this link OFTEN announces the info first (note that many international announcement have it in Greenwich time of which Costa Rica is 6 hours BEHIND)
rsn.ucr.ac.cr/index.php/sismologia/sismos-recientes

rsn.ucr.ac.cr/mapalocal/index5.php

(note you MUST add the www. with this as their webmasters did NOT properly set the site up and if you don't do that, it will say it's a bad address.

Now THIS site of theirs
www.ovsicori.una.ac.cr/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=78
I have NO clue how to read/make sense of this one)

I've noticed the above sites don't always have the same magnitudes and locations - go figure which is most accurate.

EARTHQUAKES AROUND THE WORLD
USGS
USGS is considered THE main site for earthquake reporting - BUT - they tend to take the longest to post things
earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map
This page is for earthquakes that are 2.5 or higher in the past day.
They have a separate site for under 4.5 at - http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php  -  is for ALL of them - but it looks like they only update that occasionally.
