HALLOWEEN

Halloween
is SOOOOO much more of a North American thing (aren't MOST holidays that are
about the $$$•Hallmark moments?) - BUT - it's becoming more and more
popular in Costa Rica though mainly as Costume Parties in bars at the
moment but some gated communities with large American
populations are starting to do Trick-or-Treating (safer) and some malls are starting .
Tico's celebrate
“Dia de la Mascarada” - "Day of the Masquerade"
The "official" date is
October 31
Now, a "Mascarada" is NOT what North American's think they are - they're these giants/tall - OFTEN quite scary looking things. Papermache masks that people walk around wearing with long costumes covering their bodies.
(to ME they're a bit annoying and intimidating - potentially to a child [hence could scar them for life - you know how some kids•adults are afraid of clowns!!])
that dance through the streets usually at festivals
followed by the LOUD "sounds"•"music" of cimarrona
Here are some description on it at:
HRGVacations.com/blog/halloween-in-costa-rica
es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mascarada_tradicional_costarricense
CostaRicaExplorerGuide.com/php/editorial.php?idm=1&editorial=148&dfpanel=0&menu=3
And an interesting VIDEO (in Español):

WHAT AREAS CELEBRATE
“Dia de la Mascarada”
It's celebrated mainly with kids dressing up in costumes and masks of various characters (heavily with animals).
Cartago, Barva de Heredia, Aserri, Alajuelita and Escazu
(INTERESTING - 3 of those areas had 13 fairly strong earthquakes epicentered or at least felt in them in the be-witching hours - between 1:14am and 5:40am on
November 1, 2014!!
Anyone else wonder if there's something to this???)
Pedro Arias of Escazu is the quintessential Master Mask Maker and there are many Artesanos Mascareros up in Barva also, as well as workshops+

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Latin American countries (of course including Costa Rica) tend to more "celebrate"/do the catholic
All Saint’s Day (November 1)
and
All Soul’s Day (November 2).
@@@@@@@@@@@@@
ALL SAINT's DAY - November 1
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints'_Day
All Saint's Day isn't as big in Costa Rica as it is in some countries/areas but it's actually a more FESTIVE day where some people go to the graves of their loved ones they feel have made their way to "heaven" and honor them/CELEBRATE their lives - bringing foods the person loved, bringing music, alcohol and literally PARTYING.
You might want to go visit one of the larger cemeteries around Costa Rica to experience this as SOME people WILL be doing it!
@@@@@@@@@@@@@
ALL SOUL's DAY - November 2
All Soul's Day is WAYYYY more somber - for those people feel may NOT have been "purified" nor made it to heaven yet (ahhhh the judgment in many religions).
On the above Wikipedia site they say of All Soul's Day - christians who celebrate All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day do so in the fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual bond between those in purgatory (the 'Church Suffering'), those in heaven (the 'church triumphant'), and the living (the 'church militant').
@@@@@@@@@@@@@
WHAT THE HECK IS HALLOWEEN??
Halloween (contraction of "All Hallows' Eve", "Night of All Saints"), also known as (aka) Halloween or Night of the Dead, is a celebration of Celtic origin celebrated primarily in the United States, Canada, Ireland, England/the U.K. and in Anglo-Saxon countries such as Mexico and Colombia on the night of October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day.

WHERE TO TRICK-OR-TREAT
in Costa Rica:
The main places to go Trick-or-Treating in Costa Rica are the
Gated Communities more populated by ExPats - Especially North American ExPats.
Don't like in one of these Gated Communities?
I'd post in a request in the various ExPat Facebook Groups•Pages and Forums•Message Boards explaining your situation to try to get an invitation & maybe someone would invite you to their community!!

WHERE DOES ONE FIND HALLOWEEN
COSTUMES IN COSTA RICA?
A safe bet is WalMart.
Party Stores often have some costume choices!
Costume Shops spring up (and many then immediately turn into Christmas shops after Halloween is over!!)
Another GREAT (year-round) place to get costumes -
Sex Toy type shops!
@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Have you seen any Costume Shops????
PLEASE e- me the DETAILS (details are ESPECIALLY CRUCIAL on this topic since most are shops that just popped in and outso I can Share them here
