ABOUT THE LIVING LIFE IN COSTA RICA BLOG

I (Vicki Skinner - aka "THE Sarong Goddess") created this blog in 2007 to share DETAILED Finds•Lists•Info•Events•Experiences to help bring more EASE to people living in, visiting or thinking of moving to Costa Rica since DETAILS are NOT easy to find!
I’m NOT an expert (an "expert" 2 ME knows 101%-NOT me). I believe in sharin info•helping where I can! And with over 2,200 entries, so some things might be out of date, so if you find old info PLEASE help each other by getting the updated info & sharing it with me to revise. At least you have some basic info to get you started.
VOLUNTEER TO HELP:
Better yet - do you have extra time on your hands & looking for a volunteer project? Since this blog is a labor of love & RARELY does anyone share a donation (even though MANY have said how much it's helped them), I could REALLY use help updating info. Spanish speakers ESPECIALLY welcome since my VicLish can be somewhat limited at times!!

DONATE:
Has my blog helped in any way? Helped find something•brought more EASE? More exposure or business?
I welcome you to show YOUR appreciation for my efforts!
ANY size DONATION is APPRECIATED!
(see below other ways to show your appreciation)
The easiest way is with PAYPAL - Attn: LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com
(you do NOT need to have a PayPal account to do this - just a credit or debit card)
ADD INFORMATION:
Do YOU have/know of a Business•Event•News•Place•Things 4 Sale•Rent to add? Email:
LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

OTHER WAYS TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION FOR THIS BLOG

APPLIANCE REPAIRS & PARTS - Fix-It Guys/Shops for the repair of things like Refrigerators / Fridges, Washes & Dryers, Ice Makers, Dishwashers in Costa Rica

VIC’s PICKS

MELVIN Valverde
Melvin is AWESOME, speaks quite good English (best when you're face-to-face and you aren't rambling like I tend to do!!), is VERY FAIR with his prices AND - he GUARANTEES HIS WORK for up to 6 MONTHS (how many others do that [and honor it!!!])!!!!

COMMENTS:  Melvin was VERY resourceful in helping me "Tico-ize" things with my "fiscally challenged" times (ie; get me a temporary fix on some OLD appliances - to get it working - for NOW).  One funny one was on this OLD purple fridge I had where the seal wasn’t sealing properly around the door so he put VASELINE around it and it SERIOUSLY worked as long as I had it for over a year!!!).  He's also done a REALLY GOOD job when I DID have $$ to fix things properly.  ALL of the people I know that have used him have RAVED also!!
ENGLISH:  I found him to speak quite good English (though he doesn't admit to it)!
LOCATION:  Escazu - but he’ll come on his motorcycle to you all over (though if you're further out, there will probably be some sort of nominal fee for the extra time/gas).

MARVIN Villa Lobos
(8-388-8604)
COMMENTS:  He did a GREAT job taking care of quite a few things and at a decent price (Vicki/me).
ENGLISH:  Marvin speaks some English (I did ok with him with my VicLish [a funny/totally non-perfect version of Spanglish]).
LOCATION:  Guadalupe but he comes to you all over.

BELOW ARE OTHER TECHNICIANS OR APPLIANCE REPAIR STORES THAT OTHERS HAVE SHARED BUT I DON’T HAVE DIRECT INFO WITH
(I don’t believe they speak much English and since my Spanish is QUITE limited - I’m going to rely on you to contact them and share back perhaps?!?!!?)

LARGE & SMALLER ELECTRONIC THINGS FIXED either at their location or large things like fridges or big screen tvs they will come to you
SERVICIOS ELECTRONICOS DIAZ!!

with 5 locations (their Santa Ana store is THE BEST & Grecia is 2nd best.  The rest send out to these 2 locations for the work)
LivingLifeInCostaRica.blogspot.com/2011/12/servicios-electronicos-diaz.html

There's a place in San Jose that does more challenging repairs & I believe has parts also though I don't have the name - just a phone number - no English-speaking person.  2-257-1613.

Jose Quesada
(2-252-2411-h  -  8-878-2412)
Who Melvin recommends when he's too busy.
LIVES:  Alajuelita

Eduardo Barquero Alvarez - Tecnico de Electronica y Linea Blanca
(ServiciosElectronicoSB@gmail.com)
ENGLISH:  Not sure
LOCATION:  San Jose (but he comes to you)

Marco
(8-866-3129)
Ron said he’s a GE Service Technician and might be able to provide a source or repair your washer.

Yire
(2-228-6878)
COMMENTS:  I think you have to go to him - not poz but I’ve had a few people share positive things about him
LOCATION:  Escazu (Centro) - 800 mts South/East of the Costa Rica Country Club

El Tallercito
(2-223-0330)
COMMENTS:  For a moderate fee they will pick up and deliver within the Central Valley.
LOCATION:  San Francisco de Guadalupe - Frente "Canal 4" (basically the road than connects La República to the rotonda Guadalupe)

LOCATION:  San Jose - On the corner - 100 mts. North of the entrance to Hospital de los Ninos (sounds like you have to go to them)

LOCATION:  San Jose - 200 mts East and 50 mts South of the National Theatre - behind the Caja de Costarisencias Securidad Social (sounds like you have to go to them)

NOTE:  It’s REAL IMPORTANT to get prices (or at least estimates) UP FRONT - ideally IN WRITING (I find an email is best & safest) especially for something like getting a dishwasher hooked up!!!  Sometimes something like that may cost more than it’s worth in the long run.

HINT:  Did you know that your clothes dryer should be cleaned out every so often???  WOW!! I’ve had mine for over 4 years and it was used.  I was shocked at the build up.  WOW how much better it works now!!!

WIRING for PHONES, INTERNET, ELECTRICITY in Costa Rica

Who I've used for
WIRING for PHONES, INTERNET, ELECTRICITY
in Costa Rica has been
RONALD!!!

He doesn't speak English though he understands some and each time we've worked together, we've gotten by with my limited VicLish (my/Vicki's funnier version of Spanglish).

He did all the new additional wiring for more/new phone lines & cable tv & internet connections as well as a bunch of new outlets when I first moved to Costa Rica (Pozos de Santa Ana) and in the home I'm in now (in Escazu).   He did a GREAT JOB!!!!

The GREAT/not so great part is Ronald works for ICE!!  The great part is he knows what he's doing.  The not so great part is you have to work around HIS work schedule.

He's also a REAL SWEETIE & pretty fast/quite efficient!!!

Ronald lives in Guadalupe (on the East side of San Jose) so if he comes to you not in that area he'll come via bus and you'll have to pay for his time to get to/from you BUT, he's only 4,000-colones!!!!

Ronald's phone # is  8-749-2718   You could get his sister Maureen (8-823-9251 / mau1164@hotmail.com) to help translate to make the appointment & give directions.

Please tell him Vicki sent ya!!  and let me know how he worked for you so I can start adding comments!!!

CHIROPRACTOR and PHYSIOTHERAPIST - Shahin Ravery - San Jose, Costa Rica

VICKI'S #1 Choice (BY FAR) for

THE BEST

CHIROPRACTIC AND PHYSIOTHERAPY CARE
I've found in
COSTA RICA

SHAHIN RAVERY
with Delta Chiropractico
Dr. Ravery
(I just call him "Ravery" because it's easier for me to remember/pronounce!)
is both a

CHIROPRACTOR AND PHYSIOTHERAPIST
For MY (Vicki/the Sarong Goddess') body, a chiropractor that mainly just cracks me and I'm out in less than 20 or so (IN the office [not including waiting]) does NOT work!!  My body needs careful handling!!  MOST IMPORTANTLY (this being with a chiropractor or ANY doctor) - I want someone that takes TIME with me.  First work on relaxing my tight muscles (that have formed to being in a sitting over the computer for 15-20 hours a day position) and do some physical therapy actions BEFORE jumping on me and crackin' my bones - hence potentially causing serious pain or worse - doing damage to me (which HAS happened).  (I’ve been going to chiropractors on and off for over 25 years including some top notch ones in San Francisco and San Diego. My SF chiro used to make me get a massage or sit in a jacuzzi before he’d do me since I was so tight [I got them for free so it wasn’t that he was making more $ out of me.  Ahhhh life working in advertising!!]).

I'd known of Dr. Ravery for many years from MANY friends/people I'd met that had been going to him, but my first experience with him wasn't till July of '07 when I dislocated my humerous (sp?) and clavicle (from a fall where I landed on my elbow and dislocated it).

I need someone with machines/toys/equipment to help "warm me up" and what impressed me the most about Shahin Ravery was that he spent WELL over 2 hours with me utilizing physiotherapy / physical therapy methods and machines!!!  As well as chiropractic moves, Dr. Ravery had/did everything from an:

Electrical Lower Back Traction Unit
(I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!! It's SOOOOO freeing of my lower back that often feels all jumbled up!!!)

Muscle Stimulation
Ultra Sound
Heat

He also has all sorts of

Physio Therapy Toys, weights, balls+++

Chiropractic Moves

He is even skilled to work on
CHILDREN!

EVERY time I've seen Dr. Ravery, I have felt a noticable difference and he did a GREAT job on me and most of the people I've shared his information with!!

Of course it's up to ME to continue the treatments/therapy as it's been because of MY laziness/unconscousness, that's created the improperly formed muscles to do what they're doing over time and that CAN NOT change overnight (unless I set up some sort of contraption on my desk chair to sit me up properly!!  Of course, have I practiced what I preach here - NOT!!]).

Dr. Shahin Ravery usually spends on average at LEAST 45 minutes with his patients (how many other chiropractors you've been to in Costa Rica spend that kind of time or have those types of tools?  How many simply crack you and you're outta there [which I've heard often happens from MANY patients].  Hey - if that works for your body and you're making GOOD noticeable progress - FANTASTIC!!!  If not, perhaps it's time to try another option!!!!).

(NOTE:  Contrary to the b.s. some people may tell you (and ya get to look at where THEY'RE coming from/who they're friends with [there's LOTS of "Lack Mentality" here - especially by people in the same profession]) - he IS a member of/certified by the Colegio de Profesionales en Quiropractica de Costa Rica)

LANGUAGES:
English
(It's GOOD because he lived in the U.S. for 21 years and got his degree in chiropractic there)
Persian
(his mother tongue)
Spanish
(VERY fluently)

HOURS:
Mon.-Fri. 9am-1pm, 3-7pm and Sat. 9-11am (by appointment)
(if you have a TRUE emergency and he's available, he can often come to you or meet you in the office off hours)

INVESTMENT IN YOUR BODY/HEALING • PRICE:
1st visit - 25,000-c.  Thereafter -18,000.
(fyi - I've never seen ANYONE in his office for less than 45 minutes.  I'm usually there 2-3 hours on the various electric stimulation/other machines)

LOCATION:
SAN JOSE - Paseo Colon - NEW location
At the Toyota dealership that's on Paseo Colon - turn Left and go 50 meters North.
You go Right ON the first street - 25 meters East - on your Left -
BUT - if you're driving - that's a one-way street going the opposite/West-bound way, so you have to go around the block.
Look for the sign.

EMERGENCY
Dr. Ravery can be available for off-hours and also house calls
(though most do require you to go to his office for the best/maximum care.  He can help facilitate your transportation.  Of course there is a higher price for off hour emergencies)
2-223-3030

See more pictures of his beautiful office FULL of equipment to help you heal:

(make sure you tell Dr Ravery that Vicki•the Sarong Goddess CONNECTED you and report back to me how your experience was!!
[fyi - I make not one penny/colon from Dr. Ravery sharing this information - I just want the world to know when I find something I like!!

TOUR GUIDE
MY FAV SKILL OF BERNARDA'S? - a
MASSAGE THERAPIST  -  Each time I receive a massage, I/my body has different needs.  My session with Bernarda was needing focus on circulation (I sit on my tush in front of a computer 15-20 hours a day!!!) - WOW!!!!   She got that blood flowing!!!!  My bod felt SOOOO ALIVE (& unstiff)!!  She comes from a family of massage therapists!!

SARETTO’S MARKET in Escazu (San Rafael), Costa Rica

SARETTO’S MARKET
(2-228-0247 / 2-228-6703)
facebook.com/SarettoSuperMercado

This store has some of the MOST COOL/UNIQUE gringo/international•IMPORTED things I’ve found here!!  More gourmet style products than most stores.  LOTS of HEALTHY products like GLUTEN-FREE!!!  They carry MISO Paste!

They also have one of the BEST selections of
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES (especially WINE
)
with some of the best prices I've found in Costa Rica.

They carry MANY GRINGO PRODUCTS including
ENTENMANN'S Baked Goods

(I treat myself to their Raspberry Coffee Cake about once every few months!! [it's NOT cheap!!  I think it's about $9ish!  But SOOOO worth it!!).

They have a REALLY GOOD WIDE VARIETY selection of
PRODUCE
including
LOTS of HERBS

(many from The Ark Herb Farm in Heredia - http://ArkHerbFarm.com [in the past, sometime you can make special arrangements with Ark for a special order to be delivered to Saretto's]) - even EDIBLE FLOWERS usually!!

PRODUCE SECTION:  Note that most items you need to take the items over to counter in the produce section to be weighed/tagged.
They have some of the
best QUALITY of
MEATS
I've found in a larger market (make sure to take a number here - and step UP to the counter).

They often have more unique/harder to find items.
BAG BOYS:  NOTE that their Bag Boys are NOT employees (no salary, no insurance) so PLEASE make sure to tip them (I tip them if they’re just bagging me (200-300+-colones or so depending on how much) and more if they’re taking it out for me (400-500+-colones or so).  If I don’t have much to bag or don’t have much $, of course I bag it myself or at least give them 100 colones (I’ve found MANY of them are Nicaraguan).
USING U.S. DOLLARS:
I've found when paying in U.S. dollars, usually they must call someone that must go up to the boss to bring your change back in colones - so don't be in a rush or use your Debit/Credit Card.

NOTE:  In 2012 they were bought out by Gasso that owns PeriMercado.

SPECIALS:  Check with them as it is always changing.
HOURS:  Mon-Sat. 7:30am - 8:30pm and Sun. 8:30am-2pm.

LOCATION•DIRECTIONS:
Escazu (San Rafael)
Coming from the highway/Pista del Sol - get off at the first Escazu exit if coming from San Jose - or the last one coming from Santa Ana.  At the fist light turn LEFT (on your right is WalMart and on your Left is PeriMercado and a small strip mall - Plaza Trejos Montelegre). Pass through the next light and it's on your LEFT JUST after the gas station.  There is parking in front or in the building at the street where the gas station is.

COMING FROM WITHIN ESCAZU:  Take the road heading towards WalMart/the Pista and at the light where you can veer to the right or keep going straight - at PeriMercado (JUST before WalMart) - Veer RIGHT/heading East (towards San Jose).  Pass Pizza Hut, a small strip mall on your right, then on your left - an Italian restaurant and a gas station and there it is - on your left.

COMING FROM SAN JOSE ON THE OLD ROAD:  Saretto's is 200 mts AFTER/west of the Los Anonos Bridge - on the Right side of the street.
