MANY THINGS CLOSED MONDAY October 15!!
On Monday October 15, 2012 - Costa Rican's will having a LEGAL HOLIDAY - celebrating "Encuentro de las Culturas" (which translates to something like "Meeting of Cultures"?? - but I think it has something to do with Columbus Day - and I read it's to jointly highlight both the cultural contributions of the Spanish, indigenous and Caribbean's).
This holiday is usually celebrated on October 12 but because of some law - SOME holidays that fall on certain days will change the day off (part of what I don't dig as it's not always consistant I think).
I'm reading the http://translate.google.com on it & not really getting it - especially if this is one of those mandatory Double Pay days or what (I thought I was wordy!!) - but I guess the main thing is - just don't plan on any government agencies and banks being open - which also should mean that the DRIVING RESTRICTIONS inside San Jose are NOT active this day so anyone can drive in San Jose then!!
There will be some Cultural Events happening on Sunday - October 14 from 9:30am-4:30pm - sponsored by the Minister of Cultura - http://dircultura.go.cr - at the CENAC building,

MORE ON "Encuentro de las Culturas"
Discovery of America Day or Day of Encounter of Cultures.
This date commemorates the arrival of Admiral Christopher Columbus to America. Also marks the encounter between different cultures that led to this event.
On 12 October 1492 the ships that made the voyage of Columbus, landed in an island group of Lucayas, in the Caribbean, to which the admiral gave the name of San Salvador and, continuing his journey, he discovered the islands of Cuba andThe Spanish.
The intention of the expeditions of Columbus was to find a new route to the East in order to improve trade with this region, mainly because the traditional route had been taken by pirates.
He must make a total of four trips. The second character was colonizer, on that trip visited several islands in the West Indies and visited Puerto Rico and Jamaica. In the third discovered the island of Trinidad and the mouth of the Orinoco River in 1498. On his fourth voyage explored the coast of what is now Central America. Already in 1502, first set foot on a land he called Costa Rica. The event took place on the island and Puerto Limon Uvita.
To date it has been called, more recently, as the Day of the meeting of cultures, while European culture met with indigenous New World.
