As most of you know, on Sunday, February 2nd, elections were held in
Costa Rica. So that we may better understand what’s happening, they have

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Professor Jose Luis Vega Carballo
JoseLuisVegaCarballo.blogspot.com • facebook.com/JoseLuis.VegaCarballo• Catedratico de Sociologia (the highest academic rank at the University of Costa Rica• Former member of the University Councils of the Universidad Nacional at Heredia and Universidad Estatal a Distancia.• Former Visiting Professor and Researcher at the University of Texas (Austin and San Antonio), Tulane University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.• Twice recipient of Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundation fellowships at the Library of Congress and U.S. National Archives.• Studied economics at the University of Costa Rica and received bachelor's degree at Brandeis University and a master's degree at Princeton with emphasis on sociology and philosophy of science.• Awarded national prize, "Aquilo J. Echeverria" for his book, "Poder Politico y Democracia en Costa Rica" (1982) and is the author of 5 other books and more than 150 specialized articles in local and foreign journals.
• He is now retired from teaching, but continues doing research and writing for journals and newspapers and serves as advisor and activist for trade unions and organizations in the Costa Rican social movement.

*Please be sure to make your reservation if you plan to come to any DACR meeting as their
cushion between what the hotel charges them and what they charge for
attendance is getting very thin. They used to order bocas for 3-5 extra
people for meetings, but if they did that now they would lose money,
so they order
only for those who made their reservation, and then order extra on the
day of the meeting. However, the hotel can charge them 20% extra
if they order bocas on the day of the meeting, so they need to avoid
that.
