How can the U.S. explain to foreign visitors wanting to spend money in their country why assault guns are available for every US citizen to purchase? A European Facebook user had enough and speaks out.
It almost sounded like a nightmare message for Christmas, when the United States’ top gun lobby has said that the country needs more weapons and has called on the authorities to place armed guards in all US schools, just like they do in Israel.
On Sunday, National Rifle Association (NRA) chief executive Wayne LaPierre said that Israel should be a model for the US in its efforts to deal with school violence.
“Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing: They said, ‘We’re going to stop it,’ and they put armed security in every school, and they have not had a problem since then,” LaPierre stated.
After a period of silence, the NRA responded to the recent massacre at a Connecticut elementary school by resisting calls for tighter gun control and saying the answer is more guns not less.
On December 14, 20 children and 6 adult victims were fatally shot by a gunman -- who later killed himself -- at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in the town of Newtown in the US state of Connecticut. Earlier in the day, the assailant killed his mother in another location.
There have been reports that the 20-year-old killer, Adam Lanza, suffered from a personality disorder, was on the antidepressant Prozac, and was fond of first-person shooter games.
Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.
The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
The year 2012 has been a record-setting year for gun sales in the US.
About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.
On Monday, an Israeli official said what goes on in the US is totally unrelated to Israeli gun laws.
The director of the Israeli Legal Action Center said the US National Rifle Association would strongly oppose anything similar to Israel’s gun laws. Jonathan Lowy said Israel has far more restrictions on firearms and military-style weapons than the US has ever had.
