I did a bit of research and I find many of the prices for tickets were on average MORE EXPENSIVE than in the U.S.

I don't know how your average Tico makes it here!!
And the sad part is it totally encourages people to bribe the Traffic Police to save them the expense, hassle, loss of points and their insurance.
MANY people that for ages were VERY VERY anti-bribing have shared with me they've resorted to that because of these excess in ticket prices.

That's SAD since that's corruption and if a cop is paid less than $500 a month on average - well . . .

ONLY TRANSIT POLICE can give you a vehicle ticket so do NOT let anyone else "encourage you" to take care of it!!!
